I was just randomly petting Migi and saw a tiny black thing crawling on the tip of her fur near her face. I immediately just grabbed it with my finger and squashed it. I got kind of worried so checked around her whole body and only noticed her ears have a few flakes of dandruff or something.

I’m kind of hoping the black thing I saw was just a random bug from the room instead of mites, but I’m still worried! Anyone have ideas how to check if she has mites or what I should do? I’ve had her for over a year and this is the first time I’ve noticed something like this.

EDIT: Well I just read something I found on google and apparently the mites bunnies get can’t be see with the naked eye. I’m still curious about the flakes outside of her ears though.

Some buns get a little dandruff when they are shedding. Fur mites cause dandruff (it’s not really dandruff but flakes of dead skin) and small white crusts that can’t be picked out with your fingers. If you try to, It’s painful for the bun. A mite infestation also generally gets worse over time and causes fur loss in the area.
It’s common that buns carry mites in really small numbers from when they were babies, and then one day the conditions favor the mites so they can multiply so much that they cause trouble. Stress can set that off, or a big molt or even a change of diet.
Revolution (selamectin) is very effective against mites + bunny safe. You need a vet to prescribe it for you.

When someone mentions mites here, we always issue a warning against using fipronil (Frontline, Effipro) on bunnies. It can and it has caused deadly seizures in buns.

Thanks for all the info. The dandruff is easily removed if I just blow on it or lightly scratch it off with my finger/nail. So is it safe to assume that the flakes aren’t caused by the fur mites and just due to the fact that she’s shedding a lot? She’s a lionhead, but it’s that time of the year where I’m brushing her like every other day and getting clumps and clumps of fur very easily.
