Tuppence managed to get some hay stuck up her nose and then sneezed repeatedly over a 10 second period. I think she swallowed some air while sneezing because immediately after her tummy was all gurgly and felt really weird. She then started pressing her tummy on the floor lots. I syringe fed her some crushed pineapple mixed with a sprinkle of critical care (not force fed – she just likes drinking through a syringe sometimes. I think I could give her anything through a syringe just because it’s exciting for her). She then assumed the pooping position and stayed there while also eating hay and with Casper cuddling her and grooming her. When she moved there was a very small pile of fresh poops. Her tummy feels squishy again now.

Is there anyway to prevent her gulping air in panic like that again? She’s a very fast eater and tends to get hiccups or wind when she eats too quickly. It’s like watching a mini vacuum cleaner and she ALWAYS gets big bits of hay up her nose as a result!!!

Goodness! Lucky you were home to see what happened. If she tends to get hiccups and wind, I’d keep some simethicone on hand. Baby “gas” liquid such as GasX, Infacol, Ovol.. I’ve always found it’s helped my rabbits and it’s safe to give to them.
Also, if she likes dill, that might help. I’ve read a few people saying dill has helped their rabbits that have had tummy problems. I also noticed dill oil in an ingredient in some herbal products for digestive upsets.

I’m glad she got the gas out! How scary! Casper sounds like a sweet husbun!

You could perhaps serve her her hay in one of those hanging lettuce-balls? Or in toilet-paper rolls – anything to make her have to work a bit for her food, just to slow her down. Or just scatter the hay here and there? It’s really important that they can’t eat too fast. It’s of course most important with pellets, we have had a few very tragic reports here of bunnies inhaling pellets. If she’s a pig with her pellets too, absolutely scatter them or serve them in a treat ball with a hole small enough so only a few drops out at a time.

One of our cats once got a piece of grass stuck up her nose, we couldn’t figure out what it was until a week later we could start to see it poking out. She was sneezing constantly the poor thing.

In regards to choking, for an emergency situation there are some maneuvers that can be really helpful to know. The Heimlich maneuver for rabbits and the Centrifugal Swing; described here: http://www.vgr1.com/choking/

Another idea to help relieve gas is massage! On YouTube you can find some examples. I have been researching everything bunny and came across the video the other day. If she is prone to gas issues she may really enjoy the daily massage!

Yes! Definitely useful to give a massage.
