Today I noticed the fur on the back of my bunny and upon closer inspection I saw that there was a patch a fur-less red, irritated skin. Charles has recently shed his coat for the spring and I’ve seen him groom that area but I didn’t notice anything odd until today. But the area is around 2 inches long and it doesn’t seem like a new occurrence because of the scabs on it. What is this? What do I do? Is it mites? Is it an infection? Is it just Charles over grooming himself and irritating himself? If it is over grooming how do I get him to stop? I’ve attached some photos below of what the patch looks like. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh my, that does look irritated. Could he have scraped it or gotten caught, ripping the fur out (and some skin with it)? Not sure where you’re at, but was he vaccinated recently? Those are my thoughts. There are things like ringworm, but you generally see flaky skin and raised red “rings” on the skin, not dark scabs. Then again, if he scratched it because it was itchy, it could cause the area to bleed.

I don’t think he’s gotten caught on anything, and no he hasn’t been vaccinated. I don’t know how he get ringworm though…. He isn’t in contact with other animals and he doesn’t go outside.

Hard to tell from just a pic but sometimes when Olivia is shedding, she gets little bald spots that become super dry, almost scabby and red like that. Not sure why…maybe she is over-licking or scratching the area. If it doesn’t go away/fur doesn’t grow back, best bet is to have it checked out.

LittlePuffyTail, I think that’s what it is. This morning the spot seemed to have hair growing back and looking far less irritated so that’s a good sign. I’ll keep a close eye on it for the next few days though!

This is an update on what that red patch was actually from:

I realized that later Charles had a very large abscess on his lower back side. According to the vet, this original patch of hair loss and the abscess were related and that the abscess could have started at a higher point on his back and then moved down due to gravity. If anyone sees the same type of very red and dry irritation I suggest you take them to a vet to check for an abscess!

Oh no! Poor thing! I’m glad you figured it out. It’s always good to see a vet when it doubt and it looks like this time it paid off. Thanks for the update!

Thank you so much for the update! I hope Charles will get well with proper treatment. They are prone to getting abscesses. Swending him many vibes (((((Charles)))))
