My seven month old holland lop, Luna, makes some weird noises.

When I pick her up, she makes a soft squeaking sound and when I’m playing with her, she growls.

                 What do these sounds mean??

Growls usually mean shes mad/unhappy. How do you play with her? Youll have to explain the squeaking a bit more. It could be nervousness, or too much pressure on her rib cage causing her lungs to expel air faster than usual

When I play with Luna, I have a toilet paper roll and I roll it around. She growls and then picks it up with her teeth.

Her squeaking is very soft, and I make sure that I’m not putting pressure on her rib cage when  I pick her up.

Oh. my bunny makes little wheezey-squeaky noises when I pick him up too! I think your bunny is not very comfortable when picked up, so try to do it nice and slow, and if she kicks just put her down.

About the growling, she just might not like the toilet paper roll, but I can’t be too sure!

She might be mad because you’re touching HER toilet paper roll.

Jenny makes what I think is the same noise when picked up. It used to be every time, but she made it less and less over time, and she has almost stopped now. Gina used to make it too. I think it is mainly objecting to being picked up, and both girls used to growl at me when I came close to them for whatever reason, but again, its seldom either do now. My guess would be that as she learns to trust you more, she will make these noises less.

I also think some bunnies are just more vocal than others. Pippi honks for food, but has never made the other noises, and so far I’ve heard nothing vocal from our new adoptee, Podge. Try just talking back to her e.g. when she squeaks, say to her, ‘Yes I know you hate me picking you up, but its only so I can carry you to the garden (or wherever you are carrying her)’ or ‘Yes I know its your toilet roll, but isn’t it fun to play together’, so she knows you’ve heard her!
