Okay so we have a nice backyard totally fenced in the fencing doesn’t really have any gaps or holes in it it’s not like a plank fence so when I was inspecting the backyard I saw no way for anything to get out so I took her and I put her out there and I sat there with her. She was running around seemed to be happy for the first time in a year because she hates my house all she does is hide when she’s in my room she barely lets me touch her when we’re in the house she runs away like I’m trying to kill her but I put her outside once it was okay Out there and proffed I guess I missed the spot she let me walk around with her the dogs were there running around with her she didn’t mind it she was running around in circles by my feet she socialized with me for one of the first times ever this is actually her third time outside she only tries to socialize with me when she’s outside. She was happy running around then she went over to this one side of the backyard It was where two parts of the fence met I didn’t even realize it was big enough for her to just walk through Since she’s been out there before…she didn’t even have to squeeze she just went hop and then hopped up the driveway I open the gate she hopped further up the driveway into the front yard hopped across the street as I run at high speed after her I noticed that she’s not running as fast as a bunny can at all. She was just hopping at a casual speed like a bunny that hopping around the house I run so fast I trip over my feet Finally I get across the street and I fall on my face pull down my pants smack on the concrete and noticed she’s sitting right there next to me looking at me I sat up I picked her up and that was it she didn’t run into the neighbors Shrubbery which was my biggest concern because it’s like a forest back there but now that I think back on it 10 mis ago . She was not running very fast when she left the backyard she wasn’t running fast when I was running like a crazy person Trying to get her. I was freaking out thinking oh my gosh this is it she’s gone but she wasn’t really runny she was just hoping here’s what I want to know what she actually trying to get away from me or was she just exploring? She let me pick her up without a struggle she didn’t kick shouldn’t fight she just sat there on the pavement looking at me in the street and then I brought her back in the house and now she’s hiding from me again she really likes it when I put her out there it’s like she turns into a different bunny it’s kind of amazing actually. So here’s what I really want to know though she wasn’t trying to run away from me was she? Cuz I feel like if she wanted to run away from me should be gone and there be nothing I could do about it because she is 100% able and she’s less than a year old she’s a little Holland Lop so what do you think what she trying to run away or was she just going to see what was behind the fence?

If a rabbit was really trying to run away from you, you would not have been able to catch her. She was exploring and having a great time checking out the big world. You need to be extremely careful when letting her out in your yard, and make sure you block off the gap in the fence. If she had gone out the front and someone had had their dog off lead, or a car drove by, she could have been killed in an instant.

Also, I don’t think rabbits “try” to run away, that puts too many human emotions in it. (Unless you’re chasing them down and they get scared by you). But rabbits love hopping and running and exploring and having space to run and play. It wasn’t about getting away from you, it was about checking things out.

That’s why we’re lucky we live on a quiet Road in the suburbs but I was worried about the dog or the car as soon as I saw her go out of that little Gap and hop up the driveway past the car parked in the driveway that was the first thing that went through my head was her getting hit by a car or a dog picking her up or something. That’s probably why I lost my crap I even ended up hurting myself I fell smack on the pavement right next to her she didn’t try to run away when I actually got my hands on her and fell right next to her with a
thud. I didn’t have a grip she just kind of went flat and I picked her up and now she’s in the house with me. I’m glad she was just exploring I’m glad to see that taking her outside isn’t frightening for her because I’ve been looking to possibly train her to be my companion bunny I had one for nine years before her that passed away it was my companion animal it went everywhere with me prescription and everything so I don’t know if maybe her will to explore is a good sign I might be able to have her be a companion in time after the proper training With her happiness outside and her will to explore do you think that would be possible for her? Ever since I started putting her in the backyard she seemed too high and socialize a bit more she usually just sits behind Dexter and hides all day everyday Dexter is her boyfriend. I also think taking her outside is giving me an opportunity to get to know her even though I’ve had her for a year Dexter does not tolerate me handling her touching her in any way or even looking at her she seems to think that he belongs to him he can also get slightly aggressive if I try to handle her so I think taking her out away from him sometimes is good for them and me and her relationship.

My bunny totally changes when I take him outside too!!! He doesn’t let me capture him, he runs around, and just plain avoids me. He turns WILD! But like someone else said, if your bunny was running away, you wouldn’t have been able to catch her. She was probably just exploring and having fun watching you act weird!

The last time I took my bunny inside, I couldn’t get him back inside. I had to chase him for about 2 hours. He repeatedly hid under the car and only came out very cautiously, running back under when he spotted me. It was so difficult to capture him. Long story short, I will never take him outside again.

I do think that if your bun was trying to get away, she’d have gotten away. I think she was (happily) exploring. That said, if sth had scared her, she could’ve run off. Obviously that would’ve been very unsafe (cats, cars, birds of prey etc).

Cautionary note for everybody who is planning to let their buns outside: Bunnies may look plump and incapable of fitting through small holes, but they can go through ridiculously small holes. Just like rodents, they can pretty much escape through any hole they can fit their head through, esp young rabbits who are extremely agile.
