Hi, I am a stay at home mom to three wonderful children (6yr old, 3yr old and 8 month old). I also have a 5yr old Golden/ Pyrenees pup named Maya and a week ago brought home our new furbaby bunny named Bruce. He is doing very well and we are very excited to have him join our family.

Growing up I had rabbits but when I began my research I realized that I still have a lot to learn. Before deciding to bring a rabbit home I obsessively searched everything I could think of in order to prepare. Finally feeling ready, I approached my husband on the subject and after some debate we started our bunny search. I checked out the local rabbit shelter but it was important to me to get a bunny young enough to adjust to a “busy” home (many of the rabbits were not suitable for a home with young children or over pets). After lots of ups and downs, we ended up on a waiting list (for next month) from a local registered breeder BUT my husband came across a litter ready to go and I took a look at Bruce and fell in love right there! He doesn’t scare when the dog barks or when the kids play (the breeder had a dog and kids) and he has adjusted very quickly. His breeder has connected with us for updates and seems to really care about her rabbits (which was a plus). The only thing that caught me off guard was how young he is…we asked when he could come home with us and we were told we could take him home that day (I will find the correct forum to ask questions about this). She sent us his birthday once we had him home and I was surprised to find out he was under 6 weeks (I figured he was just under 8 weeks from what she was saying and the research I did ahead of time.)

        New baby bunny: Bruce
        Age: 6 weeks
        Type: Netherland Dwarf
Neutered: He will be once he is old enough
Personality: affectionate, playful, cuddly, explorer, brave, stubborn
Litter trained: Just started but doing really well (in cage not so much out yet)

I am excited to have this forum as a resource and I hope to learn as much as I can while I am here.

Big Welcome to you and Bruce!!!

I’m also a stay-at-home home of an 18 month old girl, 2 bunnies (1 REW Lop and a small mixed breed), 1 cat, 1 rat and 1 horse.

Would love to see pics of Bruce

Hello there and welcome to the forum.

Your suspicions are correct that 6 weeks is too young. 8 weeks is the accepted age for selling rabbits, however unfortunately at least in Australia, the law states that rabbit can be sold from 6 weeks of age. I personally feel 6 weeks is too early. 8 weeks is also the legal age for selling puppies and ktitens however any good breeder won’t let them go until at least 10 weeks, preferably 12 so that they get proper socialisation and learning skills. But nevermind, it’s done now and he seems to be settling in well

Welcome to the BB forums! Bruce is young, but he seems to settle in very well and that’s of course the most important thing. Bruce is a great name for a bun
I have two buns Bam and Yohio and. German Shepherd dig, but no human babies.

Around here the age seems to be 6-8 weeks depending on how the kits are doing but Bruce was only 5 weeks when we took him home (8 days ago now). If I would have realized he was that young I wouldn’t have brought him home yet! Most breeders I contacted wait until closer to 3 months old so that they can determine which bunnies to keep, which ones are show quality and which ones to sell as pets. Bruce had been weaned and well established with food and appears to be doing well…but googling info has made me worry about how young he is. I think I will ask more about this in another thread, once I figure out what thread to ask it in! Lol

Thank you for the warm welcome! I am still trying to get the hang of this forum (with rules and where to post what). Do I need to wait to post a picture of Bruce until he is at least 8 weeks old?

Questions about Bruce’s age can be put in the Q&A section. There are other owners here who have had their buns from the same age as Bruce was. If you happen to put a question in the wrong section a forum leader can easily move it to the right section, so just go ahead and ask all you want.

Welcome, Stayathomemama28 and Bruce. I think you will find lots of helpful information here. Did you name your boy after Bruce Wayne, by any chance?
I have two rabbits – a black lop cross and a broken chocolate lionhead, and two chihuahua’s. You must have your hands and heart full with all that company (The only way!).

LittlePluffyTail I’m jealous of all your animals (especially the horse) but I feel obligated to suggest you get another rat unless there are some pretty serious extenuating circumstances for your rat being housed alone because rats are incredibly social and very easily become depressed when they live alone no matter how much time they get out of their cage.
