Hi. My 4 month old mini lop has been sneezing and had a wet nose since I got him. It’s not much of a sneeze as it is him blowing his nose. He does it very quick and short but it lets so clear discharge spray around. My vet said he had good ventilation through both of his nostrils, and it was probably allergies to something. But I cannot figure it out!!!! Anyhow, he now does not blow his nose often, only twice today, but he still has a wet nose. He acts normally, loves food, pellets and veggies, and hay, but he hasn’t been drinking a whole lot of water, and it’s through a licker so i doubt if that’s what’s causing the wetness, and he loves to dig and run around and relax. I checked his nose today, looked up it, and there was this white crusty thing in his right nostril, but when I looked back 20 minutes later it was gone. Could the wetness be his norm and the blowing nose thing something communicative? He did court my legs for 30 minutes straight today. And I mean he circled them around, in between and on my feet.

I am very scared. I already went to a vet and he gave me topical antibiotics that go in his nostrils, but they didn’t work until I got a cool mist humidifier. Should I go somewhere else and get another opinion? Should I get him tested for pastuerella? What could it be? I am at my wits end. I cannot go through this. I love him so much, but I can’t do anything for him right now, you know? Idk what is happening.

Also. I live with my parents and they take me everywhere for him, the vet, the store, etc. and they are not very receptive to bringing a rabbit to the vet as I want to. I have gone 2 times for this in the 2 months I had him. Please help

I would go elsewhere-I don’t think it’s common for them to have allergies and if that’s what they thought it was then the topical antibiotic doesn’t make much sense. Vets try their best, but most are not equipped to deal with rabbits unfortunately. There is a good page here on how to find a rabbit vet

I dont think its too abnormal for rabbits to have allergies, but the fact that its constant is concerning. I agree to going to a different vet for a second opinion just in case. One of my rabbits has seasonal allergies and will have sneeze fits and a drippy nose at the beginning fall and at the end of winter. But its not constant throughout those months, just for a few weeks at the start and finish

Ok. So I think I’ve been over reacting. I just took a q-tip and stuck it a little into his nostril (not any further than he was letting me) and no wetness whatsoever came off. It was dry as a bone. Then I wiped his nose from the bottom to the top (from the upper lip to the nostrils) and it was wet. Then I thought, what if it’s his saliva that’s making it wet. So I held him, made sure I didn’t touch his lips (like that slit from the nose to the mouth opening where you can separate it to look at the teeth) and there was no wetness. Then I redid the wipe from the bottom to top and there was wetness. So I think it’s his mouth that has gotten me worried. But idk. What do you guys think? Also. I opened his cage and there was tufts, and I mean tufts, of fur laying all over. Perhaps he sheds like this all the time. Idk.

And I should note that he doesn’t have any sort of obvious breathing difficulties, he did quick heavy breathing yesterday where his whole body shook, but it stopped after a while. I think it was because the air kicked on. He is perfectly normal and has fun. He doesn’t even hold a grudge. His appetite is still great and he drinks. But I can’t tell if he’s been drinking out of the new bowl I got him. I think he did because the level was lower than when I left for school, but it might have leaked or he kicked it or something. But it’s a heavy bowl with the bucket of water on top that is used for cats.

Having a water bowl could be the “issue”. If you think his mouth is making everything wet on the outside of his face, then you might need to see another vet. Its not normal for rabbits to have any sort of drool, so to speak. If its wet because of the bowl, then you might need to change to a water bottle. If he drinks too fast it could be coming out of his nose/top of the lip slit making the whole area wet

He’s not drooling at all. It’s not even on the outside of his mouth. When I would wipe to see if it was wet with my finger, I stuck my finger in between the slit and accidentally touched his gums without knowing it. And I just got a bowl yesterday. He was on a water bottle but that was not working for him that well. It soaked the cage up.

He still shouldn’t be sneezing. I just took my bun in for sneezing and since there is no wetness with my guy we aren’t sure if its an infection, but wetness combined with sneezing (even just sneezing alone) is reason enough to take your bunny to the vet. Especially if you just got him. It was suggested to me to take mine in last month when I adopted him for a wellness visit. And bring a stool sample. Its good to get a healthy baseline if he is indeed healthy.

Going to the vet is no fun for you or your little one, but it sounds like he needs a check up, if nothing else. Up to you, of course. You’re the bunny parent and you’re there so you have more info than we do. I hope he feels better today!

EDIT: I see that you already did bring him. Sorry! Just monitor him and if it gets worse ask your parents again. Maybe go to a more rabbit savvy one. Best of luck!

I understand how you feel my lop George tends to get upper respiratory infections. Yes their hair can cause them to have wet noses and sneezing. My other lop Gracie also tends to get a runny nose. Rabbits can have allergies: dusty hay, pellet dust. pollen, dust, strong odor like perfumes or detergents. If it is a lot of mucus, (your rabbit is having problems breathing) you should take him. If it is not much and it is clear it is best to watch it.I know it is frustrating George had the same issue when he was that age.

You mentioned the humidifier helps it could be the low humidity, my vet suggest running a hot shower and letting the sit in the bathroom to help. I am currently nebulizing George I bought the nebulizer and made my own chamber, it really has helped. You can nebulizer with a straight saline solution, which is like the hot steamy bathroom

I had panics about my Netherland sneezing quite a bit. Took her to the vet and she doesn’t seem to have any issues.
Then I noticed that she only sneezed when something bothered her – my other bun making a noise; the offer of food that she doesn’t want; a cardboard roll in the wrong place; finding her food bowl upside down etc
So the vet and I now reckon it’s behavioural. Like she’s snorting in disapproval.

I don’t know if that is of any use to you, but it might be worth keeping a note of when he sneezes?

he does the sneezes after he gets done binkying, when he sees me, when he stretches, after he grooms himself, perhaps mine is just opposite to yours. Could he be doing it in happiness?

Worth getting him checked out regardless. But apparently rabbits do sometimes do a little snorty sneezy exhale of breath while shaking their heads as a behaviour thing. Always get these things vet checked (buns have a very delicate respiratory system) and you should check your bedding / hay / litter for dust. (I now only buy dust free! – even then however you sometimes get a dusty batch!)

I have gotten him checked 3 times by 2 different vets.

I think it might just be his hair. I’ve begun using a brush vigorously and using a lint roller, lightly though, and he seems to love it, and he hasn’t done the sneezing in two days. Plus his water bowl kept clean (no hair in it).

                              Thanks for everyone’s responses!!

Update: I spoke too soon. He’s doing it rapidly again. Ugh

Never mind. I didn’t speak too soon. I checked his bottom floor and he dug his litter box creating a layer of wood pellet dust across the whole floor. I’m about to clean it up and fingers crossed that it is that.
