I can’t even believe that this happened.

I’ve had Briar for roughly seven years, she was my first rabbit. Recently she lost her partner of most of those seven years due to an abscess we fought and ultimately lost to. She quieted down, wasn’t as active for a few months but really started to perk up especially in the new year. I have been trying here or there to bond her to one of my new rabbits, Oliver, who was neutered and recovered and ready to go. They were even making some decent progress (sleeping side-by-side at night and able to spend a good 40 minutes to an hour together in a neutral location before some minor squabbles).

Last night I gave them their vegetables as usual, and not super uncommon, Briar didn’t immediately get up to devour them. I gave her a sprig of cilantro, which she took and ate and thought nothing of it. I came back an hour or so later and she hadn’t moved, again, not super uncommon. She’s had bouts of tummy trouble all of her life and I can usually spot the signs. I looked her over and it definitely wasn’t the usual tummy trouble. But she was still pooping and still angry about being picked up and was still eating so I was certain it was something that could wait until morning.

Well, fast forward another hour and things deteriorated. I was 100% certain she was dying. I gave her some of her favourite foods, which she still gobbled up and said my goodbyes and she was gone not too long after that.

I just wish I knew what happened. I was still trying to bond her with Oliver just the day before and there were no signs there was anything wrong. She was still tearing up her boxes, and eating like a pig and hanging out by Oliver’s cage until she just wasn’t anymore and then she was gone.

Im sorry for your loss of 2 of your long term rabbits, Rhian.
My heart goes out to you.

Reading your post, I was reminded of how my Jersey went -aged 6. It was similar and she also had long term gi issues.
We may never get to the bottom of what was really going with our rabbits, but I believe it helps to focus on the type of life they had and loving care you gave. I think Briar was blessed!

I’m so sorry for your loss! She was a beautiful girl and sounds like she was loved and happy when she left. I hope you and Oliver can give each other some comfort.

I’m so sorry. Jerseygirl is right. Sometimes it is just a mystery. The fact she was eating makes me think it might have been something else, like a heart issue. Regardless, I am so sorry. She had a wonderful life with you. Obviously very loved, and she knew it.

i’m very sorry for your loss, Rhian. It reminds me of when my Oreo pasted away. she was 9 and fine the whole day, said good night, locked her in her cage and she passed away in her sleep, we later found out she died of a heart attack in her sleep. we’re here for you and may briar rest in peace. again sorry for your loss. she was very beautiful i might add.
