It’s late here in Kuwait, the mother of all thunderstorms is raging outside, and Chewie is in an especially provocative mood, so… I just started Operation Petticoat (Cary Grant & Tony Curtis). It’s such a great film!
Anyone else love old movies? Chew and I watched Hitchcock’s Notorious last night.
I do, I do!
Any faves?
I’m super fond of ones like Rebecca and The Thin Man and anything with Cary Grant or Hitch or Christie mysteries.
I’m SO over my stupid internet making my ipad double post. grrr
Depends on what you call classic. LOL
1930s to 1960s (ish)
I haven’t watched any in years. As a teen tho, my siblings and I used to watch whatever came on free-to-air on the weekends/school holidays. Countless Elvis movies usually. Lol. And lot of films that weren’t well known classics. Sometimes more known ones like a Hepburn film. And once we came upon seven wives for seven brothers -omg that’s a doozy. Not certain I saw all of it.
There’s 3 classic movies that really spring to mind though.
Whistle down the Wind – I had to look up title. I somewhat remember the plot but couldn’t recall the name.
Hitchcocks Rear Window – i remember we had cousins over and we became enthralled by this one.
Some Like It Hot – I think I developed a mild crush on Tony Curtis at that time.
Some Like it Hot is on at my house at least once every few months. Great comedy.
Anything HItchcock. Bringing Up Baby. And… a lot of others! I love old movies.
Yeah, I think I’m going to have to watch these again soon. It’s been so long!
Another couple goodies:
Guess who’s coming to dinner? and To Sir with Love.
And The Black Stallion.
No way, all the BEST stuff was in the 70s and 80s.
The 80s was a good decade too, but sometimes I just crave old Hollywood.
Gone With The Wind!
I loved that movie when I was around 12. It was mostly the dresses, I had no clue about the political content of course. Me and my cousin dreamed of dresses like that. We also LOVED everything Danny Kaye ever did!
Uuu I think you gonna love We’re No Angels from 1955. Humphrey Bogart
I used to watch a lot of old movies and good one in general when I was in college.
Look for Sky over Berlin, by Wim Wenders … not so old but my all time favorit. And if you are in photography Palermo Shooting and documentary Salt of Earth.
Angel-a 2005 but its a black and white and just trust me on this one.
The Fountain, Night on Earth, Down by Low, Ghost Dog…
I also love Akira Kurosawa, look for Ikiru 1952. Slow pace movie but amazing one, Rhapsody in August…
Just try to find something from this list and be sure to tell me what you think. Would love to hear feedback. Btw. I have a lot more where that came from. lol So anyone need advice just tell me what you like, books and movies are my thingy, was never much of going out tipe. lol
I’ve seen a few of those and liked them very much: We’re No Angels, Salt, Ghost Dog, Ikiru, and Rhapsody…
I’ll check out the others when I come across them.
I’m like you: books and movies (I have hundreds of movies in my collection). This weekend, with all the rain, I was in the mood for classic classics.
Oh that is great. Hope you post some of your favourite ones. It’s rainy weekend in Serbia too, Bianca is recovering and I got some cold so some great movie would be nice!
If you’re feeling poorly, try The Thin Man and its sequels. It’s mystery, it’s funny, and there’s a great dog in it too.
I hope you feel better too. Hot soup with lemon.
My gran is Romanian – neighbours!
Lol yhea neighbours!
Anyway will look for it right away, thanks! ☺
And I yes, soup and lemon.
Young Frankenstein is in black and white. Hehehehe!
Young Sherlock Holmes is in colour but a fantastic 80s adventure classic.
And if you like Gene Wilder, The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother is a must-see.
We watch The Thing (1982) a lot too. And the Alien movies, but the original was the best.
I LOVE The Thin Man series. Almost named my current bunny Asta.
Film noire is a genre that’s guaranteed to be fun to watch. Some are really famous – like those based on books by famous authors.
Key Largo
The Maltese Falcon
To Have and Have Not
To Kill a Mockingbird (60s classic)
The Postman Always Rings Twice, both original and the remake
Double Indemnity (good actors being bad)
Witness for the Prosecution
Rear Window
I haven’t even started with the color films and musicals (Try any Busby Berkley film for art deco huge sets and musical numbers)
LBJ Yes! Amazing scifi flicks. Can quote them extensively. lol
Pam: Asta sure does steal the show sometimes… lol
The Fly “Help Me! Help Me!”
Bride of Frankenstein (Just silly)
Dracula: Bela Lugosi, Frank Langella
The Blob
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Oh yes, Rear Window. That was a good one.
I liked The Fly, but not the one you mentioned Pam. Hehe!
All About Eve (Davis)
Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Bogart)
The Great Race (Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood)
Dr Who (Baker, Tennant)
The Slipper and The Rose (Richard Chamberlain)
A Hazard of Hearts (Diana Rigg, Helena Bonham-Carter)
Really love these. Some are cheesy but they are all classics to me!
Marnie (Connery)
Love Affair (Grant)
Gaslight (Bergman)
Arsenic and Old Lace (Grant)
The Belles of St Trinian’s
The Maltese Falcon
How to Steal a Million (Hepburn)

Arsenic and The Belles are great b&w comedies.
Arsenic and The Belles are great b&w comedies.
When I was a kid, there was this revival movie theater 3 or 4 blocks from Lincoln Center my dad took us to all the time.
“Arsenic and Old Lace” is so funny.
You know what classic movie we all need to see? “Harvey” with Jimmy Stewart.
That IS a good one! (sequels too)
And Around the World in 80 Days and all the other Jules Verne classic adaptations.
Of course, when I wrote “sequels” my brain was thinking of Herbie the cute VW Beetle, not of Harvey the invisible giant white rabbit.
My list is growing…
I’ve wanted to watch To Kill a Mockingbird again forever. We read, studied and watched this in school. Anyone read Go Set a Watchman yet? I haven’t as I’d want to read Mockingbird again first. Curious to know thoughts on it though!
Very cool to see BB members from all different parts of the world! One time, a former forum leader posted an interactive map where we could all add where in the world we were. We need to do something like that again!
I’ve seen Harvey the giant rabbit! It was a weird thing, I saw that movie on tv, then the next day or if it was the same evening even, I found a rabbit. It was sitting on the side-walk of a big street in the middle of the town I lived in back then. It was white and brown. I took him home and put him in my bathtub, on newspaper. I called my mother and she called a friend who had small kids and was willing to take the rabbit, who obviously got the name Harvey.
This was a very, very long time ago.
I wanted to like Mockingbird as much as I wanted to like the book. But I’m a freak and hate both to the point where I refuse to teach it. lol
Ever since Comet came about I’ve been watching it “nonstop”. It’s a channel dedicated to old sci-fi, horror and mystery movies and shows. They show Stargate 4x a day, one of my all time favorites. Lately they’ve been showing Pumpkinhead, I hadn’t seen it before but now I love it. Some scenes are actually quite funny.
“It’s got Kim!”
“What’s got her?”
“The… the… thing!”
“What thing?”
“The thing… I don’t know… it”s a THING!”
LOL I dressed up as Pumpkinhead for Halloween one year while in high school.
Do you love the original SG series? I am a huge fan of the movie and SG Atlantis.

LOL I dressed up as Pumpkinhead for Halloween one year while in high school.
That’s awesome!
Yeah I like the original, SG-1. I haven’t seen the other two, but I’m hoping they will follow on Comet when SG-1 is done. I don’t like the idea of an all new cast, but maybe it won’t be too hard to get used to.
I think you’ll really like Atlantis. Great cast, likeable characters, and engaging adventures mixed with a good dose of humour.
Sounds good! That’s what I love about SG-1, there’s a lot of humor in it.
What’s everyone planning on watching this weekend?
I’m starting my spring break tonight with The Exorcist – because after this last term, I need a “cleansing”.
Lol well I lost my stomach for horrors of any sort over the years, but had a sister sleep over yesterday and we watched finally The Thin Man, original one. And omg. It was amazing! Those two and their dog are just adorable, “That is my dog, and that is my wife”
And I’m planing for Harvey this weekend for sure.
Hmm, depends on what’s on, I guess.
Yaaay! Niamian is a convert!
I’m really glad you liked Nick, Nora, and Asta. I too immediately fell in love with them.
You guys are giving me so many movie night ideas!
JG-That is such a good idea. I would love to get that figured out.
I’m a little late to the movie party but….
Some of my old movie faves are :
Arsenic and Old Lace
Clash of the Titans
Gone with the Wind
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies
A couple not super old movies:
Spaceballs
Airplane
Enter the Dragon (Bruce Lee)
Any Mel Brooks movies
The Original Star Wars Trilogy hehe
Spaceballs!!!!
Def. Enter the Dragon, GWTW, Astaire & Rogers, and Star Wars, Episodes 4 – 6 & 7. Not really a fan of Eps. 1 – 3.
“How many a**holes are there on this ship?” LOL
Great! I’m surrounded by a**holes. Lol
What’s the matter, Colonel Sanders? Chicken?! Lol
I could quote that movie for hours lol
It really is a great film!
I believe it shall be viewed tonight.
Pizza the Hutt ate himself to death…..
Barf.. Puke.. Whatever
LOL I was totally unable to decide on what to have for breakfast and now, thanks to you, I’ll be ordering a small veg from Pizza Hut. Thank you, master.
I’m a Mog. Half man. Half dog. I’m my own best friend.
Haha, Spaceballs is definitely a favourite around here. Really anything Mel Brookes; Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood Men in Tights, Young Frankenstein and The Producers (original and remake), I love them all Plus Gene wilder is amazing It’s all comic genius.
As for other classics, I haven’t seen a lot, but I’m quite fond of 12 Angry Men, and The King and I (1956). It’s not one of my favourite musicals, but Yul Brynner was just amazing in the role of King.
Apart from that, Watership Down is an all time favourite. I enjoyed the movie as a kid (although I know it scared most other kids, I found it fascinating). A few years later I found the book and boy is that just a rich tapestry of characters. So the movie still remains a favourite to this day and I would consider it a classic. I also remember enjoying The Bridge On The River Kwai, and Zulu, though it’s been many years since I’ve seen those. Plus a lot of the old bond movies, the star wars films and a bunch of stuff from the 80’s which is starting to become “classic” now.
I too love The King and I, Watership Down, and Bridge on the River Kwai.
