This morning he was fine. We woke up really early, cuddled with him, and he was 100% normal. Woke up from a short two hour nap to diarrhea, a hard tummy, and him tooth grinding. He even refused nanners. =(
We got him to the emergency vet, and he was diagnosed with cecal dysbiosis. He is staying there for a few nights receiving treatment. His xray stunned even the vet, because there was so much gas. My poor baby was covered in poo that was basically straight water, and it wouldn’t stop coming out. He thankfully wasn’t lethargic, which the vet said was good. It meant we got there at the start of it, so he had a better chance of recovery. I’m just terrified something will go wrong and I’ll lose my bubbies. =(
But he seems to be fine now. The vet will call me with updates. I’m worried about Chom and am a wreck. The house isn’t the same without him in it.

UPDATE #1
Spoke with the vet tech. He’s declined a bit, and entering the red. He’ll be supervised nonstop the rest of the night. The only thing is when they tried to force feed him critical care, he fought them tooth and nail. He HATES being force fed. So they are looking at that as a hopeful sign. Not him refusing to eat, but the fighting little headstrong spirit he has got going on.
But he keeps passing completely watery stools with no solids. He has not eaten any hay either and shows zero interest in anything. I’m pretty much an absolute wreck right now and terrified I’ll lose my baby. I just want him home and well in my arms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE #2
So I woke up to a phone call from the vet, and she said he was starting to do a little bit better. We went over he was eating hay, but I had to mention to watch him closely, cause him nibbling at hay doesn’t mean he is eating it. When he is angry he will chew it furiously and spit it back out when they aren’t looking, to which she laughed and called him a butthead. So she is gonna go and keep a real close eye on him for that, so no guarantee yet if he is actually eating the hay or not.
He is still passing liquid poops, which isn’t a good sign, but he seems to be more aware, and curious of where he is. And his tummy is no longer rock hard with gas and poops, she said it was starting to soften up, which is a really good sign. The vet said once he starts passing some normal poos, which she hopes is gonna be soon, and once he does that, and continues to pass normal poos and his tummy returns to normal then he can come home.
Oh no! I really hope Chom pulls through.
(((get well soon, bunbun)))
Poor Chom! I hope he’s doing better now. Do they suspect a cause?
They have no idea. We went over diet, amounts of food eaten, types of food, exercise… Everything. Not a single idea.
BUT they did figure out why he kept laying in pee. He has early stages of arthritis, in his spine and back legs which is why he would flop into the pee. Cause holding himself up was too hard and painful for him.
(((((((Chom)))))))
Got a new update out.
Thanks for all of the vibes guys. I think they have been helping.
So sorry to hear this… (((((Chom—Get Well Little Buddy))))))
Another update guys.
He was discharged yesterday from the vet. He was eating, tummy nice and smushy…. Then after work last night we had an issue. His tummy started to harden and gurgle when I would knead it softly. I could hear occasional tooth grinding. Sadly we don’t have a car and the vet is an hour away. No smartphone for Uber, and nobody could take us.
This morning he is awake, and obviously quite sleepy, but there.
It’s been nearing 24 hours and still no poops or peeing of any kind. I’ve scoured the area looking for them. I’ve had him confined to my living room, and we slept out here with him. He snuggled with me on the couch for a few hours before getting down on his own. Speckles has been isolated cause I don’t want her to pee, and mistake it for him. This morning his tummy is smushy, but I did notice some gas in there, and after a bit of massaging it did start to bloat a little. I’m gonna give him a bit more simethicone.
He was laying down relaxing and I did move him. He normally thrashes and bites when we hold him, but since we picked him up from the vets he hasn’t done that. Instead he seems to relax, so I’m a bit confused if this is a good or bad sign ya know? He did tooth purr when I massaged his lower gut.
The vet did want him to go back but we literally have no way there. Nobody would answer their phone, or take us, which I mean I understand the vet is an hour away. I get it. But it is frustrating. I also don’t have a smartphone, so we cannot get Uber.
He was eating hay yesterday, which is a good sign, but I haven’t seen him do it yet since I woke up. He is currently loafing beneath my chair. He has spread out with his back legs stretched out, and flopped which I take as hopeful signs.
He does not seem to have touched his water bowl though, so when we feed him critical care I’ve been adding more water to it, making it a bit more soupy, to make sure he stays hydrated.
For some reason even a normally very skittish bun will let you give a gentle tummy-massage when there’s gas/slow down. My Bam too teeth-purrs when he has gas and gets a tummy rub, and he sits still for it, it’s like he wants it. I’ve also found it’s good to sit the bun in my lap, with a fleece blankie on him just to keep him warm with my own body-warmth. There’s often a bit of hypothermia when a bun has gut slowdown and you don’t want that.
Making the CC more less thick is good, I’ve done that too just to get more fluids into the bun.
I’m glad to hear that he ate some hay yesterday. I hope he’ll poop and pee soon.
((((((Chom)))))
Poor little guy, all the best wishes to him and you! ((((Chom))))
I can only imagine how frustrating it must be not being able to take him. Really hope everything turns up fine
Poor little bub ((((Chom))))
He is eating and drinking but he just isn’t going. It has been about 27 hours since he last went and we are worried. Finally able to get a ride in and we are bringing him in.
I’m beyond worried, and freaking out, and hopefully our ride will be here soon.
Poor sweetheart…
I hope he poops a big pile of pellets soon. (((((get well soon, Chom)))))
I’m glad you managed to get a ride. I can only imagine how deeply frustrating it must’ve been when you couldn’t. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for poop. ((((((Chom))))))
We have arrived home. Chom is getting better. Still gassy, but so much better. The vet said he basically needs to get all of the gas out and his tummy calmed before the poops come out. There is still a bunch of gas, but only a fraction compared to what was there before. We got sent home with a CD of the xrays. Both from Thursday and today.
But he is expected to make a full recovery.
Poor Chom! I am so glad it sounds like he’s doing better!
Have you asked the vet to give you a prescription and dosage information for a bottle of metacam to keep in your house? That way, when episodes like this happen, you would have some pain meds to give Chom to keep him comfortable until you’re able to get him to the vet.
Good news! Happy to hear it! What did they do to get the gas out?
Continued healing-vibes (((((Chom)))))
Redbunbun I have not. We went to an emergency vet. This was his first episode ever in his life. So we are gonna set up a follow up appointment with his normal vet, and discuss wit with her. He may be on metacam for the rest of his life anyway.
He had a bad habit of sitting and laying in his own pee, and his hindquarters dropping into it whenever he was going. Apparently he has the early stages of arthritis, which is why he keeps doing that. The emergency vet said she would let our vet know, and if he does better on his pain meds at home, with not sitting in his pee, that we can get a prescription for him.
Bam they gave him fluids this trip, and added another medication to his list. I can’t pronounce any of the names of these things lol. The vet was impressed at the amount of drastic decrease in gas in his tummy, and said at the rate he is going he will have no gas in a few days. He is eating voraciously so that is good. Also just chilling on his new fluffy bed I got him, spread out, enjoying life, with his face shoved into a pille of his brandy new hay flavors I got him.
I rarely buy bagged hay. I buy bales fresh from a farm, but we got one of each kind of oxbow hay, to entice him to eat it. Which has worked. He loves the western timothy, and the botanical….
Any update? Sorry I missed this before. You guys have been through it!
Our update is he is fine.
We got poops finally. He is still only on a pellet food and hay diet though. Not until he has normal poops for about a week or two.
He’s lost 1/3 of his body weight cause of this, so we are trying to figure out how to make him gain weight. The vet said at this time unlimited pellets is a good idea. He is quite active again, and it makes me happy. People say to try oats, but I don’t know what kind for weight gain so I’m at a loss! >.<
His poops are good, coming regularly. They are a bit larger than normal, but are slowly turning normal thankfully. He does really want veggies though. We separate him and Speckles when she gets her veggies and he just sits there, staring at her eating, and tries to go through the baby gate. It’s cute and heartbreaking all in one.
He is done with his medications and also done with CC as well.
So glad to hear he’s so much better! I’m glad the ER vet was such a good one, sometimes you can’t get an exotic-savvy vet in an emergency.
Oats is good for weight gain and you can use rolled oats or steel cut oats or whole oats (can be difficult to find though), it doesn’t matter. Buns generally love oats. Start with a small amount.
Unlimited pellets is also good for weight gain of course.
Glad to hear he is better! (((Weight Gain Vibes)))
Great to here it ! {{{Chom}}}
Well Chom has gained about one pound since falling sick. He also had a small skin infection that has finally cleared up, and arthritis, which was the cause. He wasn’t moving around well.
But he is all better now and the vet is very happy with his recovery.
He is eating a normal diet again, and getting Metacam every day for pain management. I haven’t seen him running about this much since he was small, and it’s exciting to see that.
Really great news! Thank you for the update! Good to hear he’s back on a normal diet and moving around like a youngster
So glad to hear this!
Yup. We are super glad too!
Also in other news, we are having a new member join our family. A lionhead/dwarf rex mix. She was thrown in a dumpster by a photography company for an easter shoot. Her name is Neffie (Short for Nefertiti) and Chom and Speckles are looking forward to her arrival home!
Congrats on your new bunny!
That is such a terrible story! People are awful! But so glad she is getting a happy ending with you
Thanks LittlePuffyTail!
She comes home either Saturday or Sunday. Depends on work. >.<
We just went out and got her a nice little bed and bowl, and are preparing her space, since we are gonna have to keep them apart until we are positive they all get along great.
That’s good to hear about Chom! What a world, where people will distregard another life for what? A stupid picture that no one will care about 1 week later? How did anyone find her??
That’s great news about dear Chom!
And he’ll have a new pal, too! What a great outcome.
This is Neffie guys. She comes home tomorrow or Sunday. We are discussing currently with the sanctuary who is bringing her to us.
She’s is just… SO CUTE.
Also we are beyond happy Chom is better. He now just needs to regrow his fur on his bummy, legs, and tail. Cause…. He’s not as adorable anymore tbh. He looks…. Pretty sad without the fur. But I still love him!
Aww what a little swettie <3 so glad you've been able to give her a forever home
Continued healing vibes for (((Chom)))
