I’ve has Poe for just a couple weeks now and I am still getting to know him, but something has changed.

When he was brought home to me, he had the appearances of a holland lop or a mini lop: both his ear were very floppy, long and somewhat heavy looking.

In the last 4 days one of his ears seems to have defied gravity, and it’s sticking straight up! Which is honestly surprising, since they seem quite large for his body!

It was confirmed that he does not have mites or any other potential health issue, so this may just be a behavioral thing or genetics…He’s probably just 6 weeks old, and weights less than a lb, so it also might just be that he’s growing…but this made me wonder about his breed.

Is this a behavioral thing? a growth thing? or maybe a genetics thing?

Probably genetics. Helicopter ears are not uncommon.

Thank you for the quick reply!

So does this mean he’s a regular lop bunny with a helicopter ear? or does this mean that he’s a mix?

I’m just curious, I really don’t mind! Actually, it’s quite adorable.

I think either scenario is possible. The lopped ear is the result of a gene that makes the cartilage around the base of the ear insufficient to hold the weight of the ear up. With some effort, fully lopped bunnies can use their muscles to raise their ears. Leopold will lift one ear up occasionally, for example. Sometimes the genes are somewhere in the middle where the ears sort of want to lop, but they can still mantain a high degree of control. This can happen in purebred and mixes bunnies.

Oh those crazy cute ears! My bunny came home with totally lopped ears as well but now he regularly holds up his right ear. It doesn’t go straight up but he does get it up 75 percent of the way. It has been like that for about 3-4 weeks now. Lol. Your bunny is adorable!

                  Thank you!

I think Poe is a mix…as the days go by he keeps growing and he’s little body is changing. His face seems longer than the typical holland lop. I’ll try to upload some photos (i’m having tech issues at the moment).

And yes, it’s really cute! It kinda makes his personality shine…I’m afraid he’ll be quite the mischievous bunny!

Chewie is a lionhead mix and he’s got helicopter ears sometimes. It is cute – especially watching the furballs change as they grow.

Thor has “charging bull” ears in resting position, but like LBJ10 indicated, both ears can also move independantly and he seems to have great control, as they can also move almost vertical when alert. The vet said he was a Lop cross. I think Poe is perfectly normal in that regard.

                        He’s probably a mixed breed. He’s adorable!
