Last night i got a 5 week old bunny from some people on craigslist. They told me a few things to help me out, but not enough. Ive noticed my bunny hasnt eaten anything since ive had him. I called a local vet and he told me that it was normal and that the bunny was probably just scared. Im still concerned fho. Hes so young and hes not being very active. Ive picked him up ans cleaned his bottom and layed down with him..tried feeding him some veggies or pellets or even hay but he wont eat anything or even move around much in his cage. Should i be concerned or is there something wrong?

5 weeks seems awfully young – was he properly weaned from his mom? Also, young bunnies should not have fruits or veggies before 12 weeks, and even then they should be introduced gradually.

I agree that nerves will play a part in the bun’s not wanting to eat – after all, a brand new home with brand new parents must be pretty stressful. But it’s important that a bunny not go longer than 12 hours without eating or pooping, so I would suggest either syringe feeding mushed up pellets, or taking the bun to the vet for some forced feeding of Critical Care or something similar.

Also, make sure he has something he can snuggle with like a fleece blanket (and that he’s warm, of course). Perhaps the vet can advise you over the phone whether to bring him in right away or try syringe feeding at home??

Hi Christina, I would like to add to what Q8bunny has said, to make sure that this vet specialises in “exotics”, like rabbits. Though it might not seem like there’s a big difference, you want to make sure you get the right advice for your new little guy.

Bunnies should remain with their mothers for longer than 5 weeks. The fact that your bunny is not eating and is not active is concerning and I think it would be best that he goes to see a vet as soon as possible. There is a section here with a lot of good information on all the basics of rabbit care. It is BUNNY INFO, there is a link at the top left of each page. There are also links to lists of rabbit savvy vets here. I hope that your bunny will be okay.

If in doubt – seek help immediately. There’s no time to lose with a bun who is not eating.
                Good luck !

Poor bunny. At least he went to someone who is trying to find ways to give him the proper care!

Keep your bun warm, try syringe feeding feeding and watering him like Q8 said! From what I’ve learned about bunnies so far, stress can cause them to go into GI stasis so it’s important you make sure he gets some food in his system. Young rabbits typically eat alfalfa hay. Focus on pellets for now, your bun is still a little young to be having veggies.

I’d get him into a vet that is experienced with bunnies. Maybe they can give you something to feed him to keep him healthy since he’s so young. I’m still learning myself, but you came to the right place. You can learn so much from these people on here, and you can ask your vets lot of questions too!

Unfortunately, the day after i posted this i found him not breathing in his cage. I contacted the people who sold him to me and they told me that they gave me the “wrong” bunny. I brought the bunny baxk and they gave me another one. My bunny now has had no issues. Hes very healthy and active. So i think the other one was just sick to begin with.

I’m sorry to hear that. Sounds to me like a breeder trying to get away with passing on a sick rabbit. That being said, when I first got Bandit, I was driving home with him and the breeder phoned me to tell me she had accidentally given me the wrong rabbit, so I had to turn back. She actually had though, I picked the boy and in the confusion she accidentally sent me home with one of the girls (they were all the same colour).

I’m very glad to hear that the bunny you have now is very happy and healthy
