Olivia has lost 2 ounces in the last 2 months. I’m noticing she definitely feels more bony. She was always a pretty solid little gal. I’m hoping it’s just due to her age, she’s going to be 9 in the Spring (judging by what I was told when I got her. I was told she was 1 but she could have been older).

I’m bringing her in for a check-up next week. I assume my vet will do full bloodwork. And I will definitely get her teeth checked.

She’s still a happy (well mostly…she’s still a mega Diva and a Drama Queen….). She’s eating well and as active as always.

Bindi’s going in for his molar trim at the end of this month. Sigh……those two are lucky they are so cute with the bills they produce…

I got my bunny when my guinea pig died as means of coping. Only having guinea pigs the past 7 years, it was a bit of a surprise when I ended up dumping close to 400 dollars into her! And I’ve only had her since Jan 25th! 250 of that was vet bills alone.

You’re totally right though. Their cuteness definitely makes up for the money they seem to rack up.

Hoping Olivia gets some of her weight back on and she has a good vet visit with good heath!

Well we all know how pricey can be something even a little with bunnies. But they do pay all out with hoping binkies ang kisses.

Wish you guys uneventful vet visit. And good health to little diva.

I didn’t see this until now LPT. I hope all is well with Olivia and that the vet apt goes smoothly. Olivia is my favourite diva bun!!! Nobunny can carry off a blonde wig and an automatic hand-gun like she can! I recently took a wee MOOC (Uni of Florida) about horses, and horses seem to be less good at absorbing nutrients from their food as they age. Nowadays, they add fat (plain human grade cooking oil) to their diet to keep their weight on them, because they are hind-gut fermenters and don’t do well on extra carbs. Not suggesting you add cooking oil to Olivias food =D but hopefully this weight loss is due to her getting on in years.

Poor Olivia. I hope the appointment goes well. I agree, Bam might be on to something. Maybe not cooking oil though. LOL

                      Thanks, Bam and LBJ.

We were actually talking about that on one of my rabbit FB groups the other day. I mentioned about Olivia’s weight loss and I was wondering if it was the same as senior horses. They lose muscle mass and require more food to keep their weight up. There is a pony at the stable where I keep Winnie and he’s in his 30’s, no one knows how old exactly, and he gets like a huge bucket of grain, where my horse only gets a cup full. Winnie is almost 15 and still in pretty good shape. She’s an “easy keeper” though. She has insulin resistance and has a tendency to be plump even on a small amount of grain.

During the winter, they give the older horses beet pulp which helps keep their weight up.

That’s awesome you are doing a course on horses. They are so similar to rabbits.

I’ve started Olivia on a very tiny amount of steel cut oats. Like 1/4 teaspoon once a day with her pellets. I’ve heard this can help.

I started giving Bindi a bit of oats too. I want his weight up too. He feels too bony, like he’s lost mass. And I’m pretty sure his ear infection is back.

11 days with not Baytril and it’s all filled up with smelly gunk again…..sigh…..don’t know what we are going to do…

                            ((((((Bindi))))))
Poor dear darling Bindi. Some humans with chronic infections have to be on abs for the rest of their lives. (specifically cystic fibrosis-patients who get chronic bacterial infections in their lungs. The bacteria can’t be eradicated but are kept down with IV abs once every 6 months and daily oral antibiotics the rest of the time. This treatment-protocol has prolonged these patients’ life-expectancy a huge lot.) I don’t know if a bunny could be on abs like all the time or if it would cause other serious health-problems.

I’m wondering if he may need to be on Baytril Otic permanently. Worry about the bacteria becoming resistant to the meds.

Olivia went to the vet today. They had to sedate her to get bloodwork, the poor thing. She is still really sedated, 3 hours after. I called the vet and they said if she doesn’t come around soon to bring her back in. She just gets REALLY stressed about going to the vet. Worse than any bunny I’ve ever seen. It’s very stressful for me to bring her. Hoping she perks up soon and is just being a diva. Don’t want to have to bring her back in.

So we will get full bloodwork results next week sometime. She needs her teeth done, one of her molars is so long it’s pushing on her tongue. Hopefully, that is the only thing causing the weight loss. We will get that taken care of after we get the bloodwork results.

So, for now, she’s getting Critical Care supplement to try to keep her weight up. Bindi too until his dental appt.

My vet posted this pic of Olivia to their FB page because she is just so lovely.

Aw there’s the Sweetie! I hope you see her perk up soon, LPT,
                                    .

It’s sounds as if you may have discovered what the drop in weight is due to.  Teeth. I do agree that you can see it with aging also. It gets so worrying doesn’t it? Ive been doing the rolled oats for Rumball also. I wonder if adding sunflower seeds is a good move or not??

{{{Olivia and Bindi}}} Keep us posted on her!

She really is a gorgeous girl! I hope the teeth-issue is it, it seems more than likely. Poor little darling, getting so stressed at the vet
Jersey, Redbunbun who has a megacolon bun (Sukka) gave her pumpkin seeds as well as oats, to get her weight up with sth that would also be good for a sensitive tummy. Sukka was underweight and not thriving.

Poor Olivia 🙁 It guts you to see their little faces, all helpless and subdued. She’s very pretty. Hoping all goes well with Bindi and Olivia, Little Puffy Tail.

Thanks, guys. She’s back to normal now. It took a long time. When I went to bed last night, she was still only hopping on the front and sort of dragging the back. I got up a few hours later to check on her and she was back to normal. I think she is just a really big drama queen and has low pain tolerance. I’ll never forget after she was spayed, I was convinced she was dying. Not looking forward to the dental drama that will ensue…

She’s on critical care several times a day (she and Bindi both gobble it up, thankfully) and steel cute oats for now. Hopefully the dental work will have her weight coming back on. I’m eager for the test results. I should know by Tuesday.
