Philomena has never been one for pets and cuddles and I do my best to respect that. I do steal pets from her once in a while because she’s just so darn cute. Well I broke a bunny mom rule and pet my darling while she was sleeping in her cage (she was just too darn cute). I made her aware of my being there by letting her sniff my hand so she knew that it was indeed her mummy that was coming in. She went back to relaxing and I pet her head a bit. Then something strange happened. She became more and more relaxed. Her eyes went shut and she began to purr and she let her head slowly fall into the “pet me position”. I continued the love and she began to fall asleep. My roommate came in and woke her up and I left her alone because she wanted to get up and move around.

I tried again later when she was lying on her side trying to sleep. She didn’t even get up from her position when I entered her playpen attached to her cage. I did the same thing and I got the same response. I let my hand rest on her shoulder very lightly (as though I was sleeping next to her) and she began to fall asleep again. I could even feel her twitch as she started dreaming.

My question is if anyone else has a bunny that does this or if Philomena is weird and only wants pets when shes sleepy. I know that a buns cage is their domain so invading it is often a no no but if she gets so relaxed and content when I pet her in her cage is it really a bad thing for her? When she is tired of me petting her she will push my hand out of her way and I leave her alone after that so I am trying to respect her while also getting some pets in too.

Sounds like you bun feels safe in her cage, no risk if being picked up. Buns in the wild cuddle up and groom one another in the borrow and can relax with no fear of predators. Is she your only bun? When there’s another bun in the herd they get more affectionate out side there safe place , one bun gets the pets one is on the look out but remember to pet the other bun too ,bunnies are jealous critters. It’s up to the bun weather they let you in the cage some hate it some don’t mind. My buns are never locked up and get free range of the house but they do have there own room. My girl Clover was very much like your bun but after about 4weeks she is happy for pets any where.

Thank you for he input. It really makes sense that she’s happy to let me cuddle with her as if I was another bun. Philomena is a solitary bun unfortunately and has reacted very negatively to other buns, which I know is normal for an initial meeting but she will attack anything that remotely smells like another bun. I have a scar from the last time I came home after petting another bun. So she will remain solitary for the time being until I am in a better position to bond her.

Philomena and I have special routine for when she needs to get picked up. when she hops into her playpen (which she has access to 247) I will close the door to her cage. She thumps to let me know she is unhappy. I pick her up. We do business. I put her back. I open her cage. And then she begs me for her good girl treat. I never pick her up in her cage unless its necessary (like her giving her meds when she isn’t feeling well so she wont come out of her cage).

I’ve noticed that ever since petting her this way she has become more and more accepting of pets outside the cage and playpen so hopefully she’ll be more willing to accept my affections in time.
