We have a two story house, and up until yesterday, our bun had the run of the first floor only.  She’s always showed an interest in coming up to the second floor, and because we are soon getting our kitchen redone, we decided to start allowing her upstairs so that when demolition starts, we can keep her safe upstairs.  Needless to say, she is beyond excited .. exploring every corner.  Tonight I took her back downstairs for her to sleep in her cage because she won’t settle down upstairs.  She loves to  be under our bed, and we’re hoping she’ll start sleeping there soon, but I’m not sure how to get her to do that.  Perhaps, I’ll start with bringing her upstairs during the day so the novelty wears off, and maybe she can learn to take naps up there first?  I know some of you allow your buns to sleep under (or in) your beds, but how did you introduce it?  I’m also a bit concerned that if she’s not caged, she’ll have us up at the crack of dawn.

I think it could possibly be confusing for a bun if you’re taking them from upstairs to downstairs intermittently. (As opposed to free range at times but returning to their secure base when they want to.)

Some buns are more suited to sleeping under/on beds than others and you probably won’t know until you try it.

Move her cage up to where you want her to stay, so she has familiar items and she’ll settle eventually. My current buns settle within a day, but my previous bun would take days to adjust to his cage being swapped around, never mind a new place.

Unfortunately, having the freedom in the dark or learning that you’re not to be disturbed while sleeping may be something she can only learn through practice (and sleepless nights for you).

Mine are shut away at night owing to their shenanigans.

She goes up and down the stairs on her own, so when we open the bedroom door upstairs, she can come and go as she pleases, and always has the option to return to her cage downstairs. However, her cage is going to be relocated when the kitchen demolition begins, so maybe you’re right, and I should bring it upstairs now so she can sleep in there if she wants. I was hoping she would just start sleeping under our bed because her cage is too big to fit in our room. I’ll just have to remove a few of the NIC panels and make it smaller.
