Is there safe shampoo for bunnies? If she likes her fur it’s ok for her to eat it. Her feet and bottom are gross and water isn’t doing it. She sits in her litter box and that’s what it’s from.

Dark yellow and wet from pee. She drinks a lot of water. I was looking at the shampoo at Petco and Petsmart.

Here are the instructions for a bunny butt bath, both the dry and wet methods. The type of shampoo to use is mentioned. Don’t get pet shampoo, get an organic, hypoallergenic soap from a natural foods store. When I have needed to give elderly bunnies a butt bath, I used the same bar soap that I use for myself – Clearly Natural.  It is hypoallergenic, and cruelty free.  It comes in scented or unscented varieties.  It is sold in regular grocery stores.  Use as little water as possible to get your bunny’s feet clean. Maybe you should change the type of litter you use, clean the wet areas more often, or use litter box screen (sold here in the BB store) to keep her feet from getting wet. You can’t be constantly giving butt baths, so it would be good to eliminate the problem in the first place.

I was looking at the pet shampoos at Petco and Petsmart. I’m using Yesterday’s News as the litter.

I use dry rabbit shampoo, that I found at a local Pet Market – it is a spray. It’s not actual a bathing but it helps to keep my bunny clean. Maybe you should try?

                    I’ll try that. Thanks.

I bought wipes that this lady told me to buy but it doesn’t seem to be working. I changed her litter. I’m trying to find a safe bar of soap for her.

I don’t have a shampoo recommendation, but to keep her feet drier in the future, toss a layer of hay over the litter. The litter is absorbent and will stay wet, but the hay sheds moisture quickly. You need the absorbency of the litter underneath, but a dry layer on top. The hay will let the pee pass through to the littler leaving a drier surface for her to sit on.

Urine staining will not just wipe off if it’s been there for some time. You can usually get the worst of it removed, but there will always still be some staining there until the fur grows out and gets replaced, so cleaning it now is good but also sorting out the problem of the staining from the litter box will be the solution long term.

Yesterdays News can get pretty soggy, either use a grate with the litter box, pile hay on top of the litter, or even try a wood pellet litter. What did you change her litter to?

Thanks for the hay on top do the litter. I’ll try that. I changed it from Yesterday’s News to Fresh News. That was especially made for small animals. I’m just trying to get some stains off, not all of it. I’m sure it’s bothering her too.

You should be able to find Clearly Natural soap fairly easily. It is sold in all the grocery stores around here. As I said above, I use it myself and have used it on my bunnies. It comes in unscented or some lightly scented varieties. It’s hypoallergenic and cruelty free. There is also Kirk’s Original Coco Castile bar soap. I just bought some of that for myself. I have sensitive skin and only use these mild soaps, which are not tested on animals. The label says “Natural, Hypoallergenic Skin Care with No Animal By-products or Synthetic Detergents.

                                The hay worked. Thank you.
