        Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation to us.

Our bunny Peri began peeing outside her litterbox around 3 months ago. The peeing increased in frequency from every other day to about 4 times a day, it also went from just inside her cage to outside on the carpet.

We went to see an exotic vet and she diagnosed Peri with a urinary infection. She gave Peri a antibiotics called Sulfatrim and recomended that we use it for atleast a week, which we did. Almost immediately after we used the antibiotic, the peeing completely stopped, however 2 days after the course the peeing returned, increasing in frequency from every other day to 1-2 times a day.

When we bought her back to the vet, the vet said it could be due to resistant bacteria, therefore she may need to go on a longer trial with a different antibiotic. However, she was concerned that the course should have gotten rid of the urinary infection, so she recommended a full diagnostic test to check her kidneys, bladder sluge (e.g. blood test, urinalysis, x-ray). She got the all clear on the blood test and x -ray, they found a small amount of bacteria from the urinalysis but because the sample was taking externally this could have been from the environment. The vet recommended a different course of antibiotics (Baytril for 14 days).

The Baytril didnt work at all, we used it for 10 days, with no success. Went back to the vets, who gave us a longer course of sulfatrim. Similarily like before the sulfatrim worked immediately and we had no pee outside the cage throughout the course (15 days).

But 9 days later, surprise, surprise the peeing has come back, although not at such a high frequency (every other day usually)

We are going back to the vet. She mentioned before some aspects could be behavioural. There are certain spots she tends to pee in. However im just confused as to why the sulfatrim works but the baytril doesnt. One thing I was wondering, although this may not be related, she needed to be restrained when feeding sulfatrim, whereas baytril was fed hidden in food, could the fact we had to pick her up and took her out of her territory to feed her meds be linked somehow.

p.s. other than the peeing she has been behaving completely normal, apart from when she’s on her meds when she’s a little tired after.

If anyone has any advice on how to resolve this it would be very appreciated, thank you for reading- i know the post is very long.

How old is she? I’m not an expert so I have no clue but I had a rabbit that had started peeing and pooping outside her litter box, she had some arthritis in her and I think it was hard for her to get in the litter box. She had other problems too that eventually her back legs gave out. I’m not sure if we ever got an actual answer what was wrong with her. But if those meds were working and then she started up again, I’m not really sure. I’m sure someone else can give you a better answer but I didn’t know if she was older and maybe was having trouble. (I’m new…kind of so I don’t know anything about your rabbit yet 🙂 )

Thank you so much for replying,
She’s only 3 years old and in good shape. She has no trouble using the litterboxes most of the time, and i dont think she has any trouble moving. We have 3 litterboxes at the moment, 2 of which are very easy to access.
So far we have been pee free for 3 days, so hopefully the recent peeing may be due to hormonal behaviour rather than related to her urinary problems.
We will let you know how it goes, i case anyone else has a similar problem.

With a longer course it seems that the peeing issue had gradually died down but she seemed to be continue peeing in the same spot, so it looked like some aspect was behavioral. We rearrange the room and cleaned the carpets with white vinegar- we did this continuously. It took a couple of weeks but eventually she stopped peeing outside her cage.
              – Just thought i would post this in case anyone else was experiencing a similar problem.
