So Sandy went on her dates yesterday and picked out “Spanky” now known as Sheldon.  They got along great, she ignored him pretty much but they ate together and never fought.  She had another date with Benny and she did not like him and bit his butt and he was scared of her after that.  So we brought Sheldon home with us last night!  We let him out to bond with us and Sandy was not to thrilled about that.  She was like “I didn’t think he was coming home with us!  He’s running in my hall!” and when he passed the gate she lunged at him.  So today I tried to bond them.  I put them in a small x-pen so they didn’t have a lot of room together and they did ok for a little bit.  Gave them some parsley to share and as soon as Sandy moved around to eat by herself she nipped him!  And then they went at it, growling and rolling around.  I tried to break it up and pick her up and she was like let me at him and got out of my arms and I got her again while Sheldon was still holding onto her leg for a min.    Boy was that scary! I won’t be bonding before my husband comes home again and I’ll wear some gloves too!  So it’s been awhile since I’ve bonded so any tips would be of great help!  At the moment I’m like what did I just get myself into, maybe this was a bad idea!    On a side note Sheldon has never been with another bun either.

Well I’m not a pro, but separated side by side so atleast they get used to each others presence, and then together in real neutral territory (do you have any or does Sandy have full run of all house?)
If not then you said the shelter offered a bonding service…. so take them up on it, absolutely !!

That’s what the lady at the shelter had told me too; I’m keeping her updated. She has most of the house (they’re cages are in basement but she has all of the back hall and I bring her upstairs). There’s a few neutral zones I can think of. Yeah I’ll keep trying but if Sandy keeps at it then I’ll def take her up on bonding them.

She needs to see him as a mate in a catastrophe (needs a +1 to “survive” out-of zone!!) rather than a big bad enemy on home ground !! LOL
Good Luck ! We look forward to seeing the loved up buns together !!

Ok so update on their bonding processes. Since Sheldon was peeing outside his litter box so much I was trying to get that straightened around before bonding them. So it’s a lot better, he’s still not perfect and we still have 2 litter boxes in his cage.
I tried bonding them today and I was so nervous which I’m sure they could sense too. I petted them both and then let Sandy go a little and then was petting her to keep her calm when she got close to him because I was so afraid of her attacking him again. He went to her face and I wasn’t sure what he was doing, nuzzling her cheek or trying to bite her but I stopped him and petted him a bit and let him go and he bite her nose and she squeaked a little! I put them together and petted them on a good note and put them in their cages. I was just so scared of them attacking and I didn’t expect him to bite her! Maybe that was payback from the first bonding when she attacked him. So I told the shelter and said I really wanted to bond them but I’m so stressed out about them attacking that I’d rather leave it to them to bond them. They offer a bunny bonding service and she said she’d do it for free for us since I’ve been having such a hard time and they want their customers to be happy, so that’s really nice of them! We’re bringing them tomorrow and they stay there for a week. She said if they can’t bond then they’ll work something out with maybe another rabbit would be better for her. I hate to leave her for a week, I don’t want her to think we abandoned her 🙁 We’ll see how it goes though, I trust them and they’re better at bonding then I will be.

That’s great you have that option. Wishing Sandy and Sheldon the best of luck!

I’ve gotten a couple of updates on how they’ve been doing.  First she was doing short sessions and then it went up to 2 hours of running around and then 3 hours of out time together.  No fighting except she thinks Sheldon might have nipped at Sandy when he was trying to get out of a corner and she was behind him. But she didn’t attack him.  She said the next step is cage confinement and we’ll see how that goes.  Here’s a pic she sent me.

Well they were doing well and then Sandy attacked Sheldon for no reason besides being to close to her. He had just went to drink some water that he had done multiple times before while she was laying there.  She sent a few pics right before she attacked him and the last pic she was cleaning herself so I guess he might have startled her.

That night they didn’t use their litter box.  Yesterday Sheldon got back by smacking Sandy.  And I guess they were both in a bad mood.  She said Sandy seems to go a bit nuts if he’s to close to her.  I know she’s not used to being with anyone else so that could be it; she’s used to her own space.

Hoping we get some good news soon.  I miss them.
