I got my 3 year old female rabbit spayed around 2-3 weeks ago and only noticed now that there was a small bump on her lower abdomen. Took her to the vet immediately and he opened it a little to see and there was pus inside! He cleaned it up a bit and gave her an antibiotic injection and an veterinary inflammatory infusion which I apply once daily. She is eating and behaving fine but it really scared me. Could this be serious? There is still a little bump on the inside and some pus as well. I’m keeping that area covered with a small piece of cloth currently. What could be the reason and what should I do about it? I’m very worried.

Bunnies are notorious for getting abscesses. The incision site probably got infected and the abscess slowly developed. Was the pus hard? I would think if the vet opened it to look at it that they would try to remove it if possible. A single antibiotic injection may not do the trick. She may need a longer treatment.

Yes, the pus had gone hard and become almost like a plug. The vet did clean it up as much as he could and gave her antibiotics which I have to give her twice daily. Going to see him on Tuesday again for another injection and check up.

Oh okay, so she’s getting oral antibiotics as well. It might take awhile before you see improvement, but it sounds like the vet is attacking it aggressively.

Yeah I was concered about that as well. She is quite lethargic but it could be because of the cold. I’m taking her today itself to get the wound checked out again. It seems there is still some pus left. She also suddenly got gas so I’m giving her simethicone so hope that helps. I’m very worried though :/

Oh no, the poor thing. What antibiotics is she getting? Sometimes they cause digestive problems.

She seems to be shaking a lot as if shivering but her ears are completely normal to touch. All of this just happened suddenly. She was normal for weeks after the operation. It was just when the vet opened up the wound to clean it all of these problems showed up. Could she be running a fever?
