  My Netherland Dwarf Lionhead cross Petey is currently in a small enclosure near a window. I am looking to give him more space to run around, but to do so he won’t have as much access to light. Like any living thing I know it is important for rabbits to get enough of the right kind of light. I’ve been looking into full spectrum light bulbs, but was wandering what you guys thought. Is there one that is better for this than others? Would a grow light (like you would use for plants) be better? Any and all suggestion are welcomed and appreciated!

  I wouldn’t use a grow light. I think a regular bulb called natural light is fine, or a natural light floor lamp (I used one where I used to work) as long as you bunny proof the cords. Are you sure he needs it? A window provides natural light, and bunnies sleep midday, and come out at dawn and dusk. They burrow in holes in the ground, so they are not genetically designed to need a lot of sunlight. If you are concerned, there are multi-vitamins in the store you can supplement with, but I am not sure you need to worry. Also, bring him into another, lighter room to play with you for a couple of hours if you can.

  I do plan to let him out as much as possible, but where he would be kept only has a window around the corner, so there is no direct source of light without a lamp.

  One more suggestion: if you have a counter or desk in his room, get a natural lamp that’s a desk kind and bounce the light off the wall or ceiling. Bounced light gives lots of indirect illumination, lighting the room in general and not with a strong spotlight, but it keeps the bunny proofing easier since the cord is up off the gound, unlike a floor lamp. But no strong grow light, please.
  
  BTW, bunny proof your lamp cords with the twisting cord protectors you can get at a hardware store or Walmart. A bunny will chew it, but it works well to protect the cord inside. Just twists on easily to cover a long cord, too.
