        I need advice!
I’ve had my bunnies for nearly two weeks. The female (tinker) is nearly 13 weeks old and the male (Terrence) is 11 weeks old. They live in doors and tonight we have come to stay at my mums for the night.Ive put them in a previous rabbits run for the night. They seemed happy enough being there normal selves and doing binkies around the room and then I noticed Terrence humping tinker. She didn’t run off or grunt but I moved Terrence away from her.I plan to get them nuetered/spayed as soon as I can but I believe I have a little while yet to wait. This is the first I’ve seen of them doing this, could it be that they have smelt the scent of the previous rabbit (a male) on the cage so Terrence is making himself known? And is there chance of tinker becoming pregnant as that’s not what I’m wanting?Do I just let Terrence carry on or do they need to be separated?Thats really not what I want to do.

You have to separate them asap. A bunny can get pregnant at 12 weeks. It only takes one mating since they are induced ovulators i ex they ovulate upon mating. Hopefully this is about dominance, but you can’t chance it.

Keep them in the same room but with a bit of distance between their cages since buns can mate through cage bars. They won’t want to be separate, but I’m afraid they’ll have to be. It is important though that they can see and hear and smell each other.

The boy can be neutered before the girl can be spayed.

Is he able to get her pregnant with him only being 11 weeks?I hope I haven’t left it too late as they were together over night after I seen him humping her.She seems very quiet today and doesn’t want to be stroked, she keeps running away from me.I will be separating them once I get the other cage and will be booking him into get neutered as soon as he is able.Thank you for your reply.

I sincerely hope he’s too young, but at 12 weeks bunnies must be separated and I wouldn’t put it past the odd bunny boy to be an early bloomer.

I hope you’ll be fine, all three of you!

I have booked them both in to have a health check and see if he is ready yet to be neutered.Ive separated them but they both seem very sad.Ive had many rabbits but never a male and female together,I obviously knew they needed to be neutered/spayed as soon as but didn’t realise they were fertile this young.I think it was a bit bad that the breader didn’t give me any advise on this knowing they would be living together.Thank you for your help though.

Are you keeping them where they can still see and smell each other? That might make the separation less hard.

Some bunnies are “early bloomers”, especially in smaller breeds. Humping can be a dominance thing or a hormonal thing. The problem is, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The girl might be young, but the stimulation might make her become fertile sooner than expected. As the others have said, it’s better to not risk it. I would separate them as soon as possible. Hopefully it isn’t too late. Let us know how the vet visit goes. If his testicles are there, he can be neutered.

Thanks everyone. They are off to the vets today.Ive got them in the spare bedroom in separate cages where they can still see each other,I’m taking it on turns to let them have a run around and they’ve been going up to each other’s cages for kisses.Baby bunnies was never my plan so fingers crossed she’s not pregnant, the vet has said there isn’t really anyway of telling yet.
