So I got a new baby bunny  (8-9 weeks) and he doesn’t seem to like alfalfa hay, kind of picks over it, but he likes my other rabbit’s hay which is orchard. Is it ok to just let him eat orchard hay as long as he has alfalfa pellets?

Also have an issue with the older bunny trying to eat the alfalfa hay and pellets. They are in different cages.

It’s great your bunny loves grass hay! I wish mine would eat more grass hay… I think as long as your bunny is eating the young rabbit pellets, that should be fine. I have a rabbit about same age as yours and I was told by her vet to give her unlimited hay and pellets. I do know that older bunnies should not eat the alfalfa hay due to high fat and calcium content so I was advised to not give alfalfa to >1 year old rabbits and if I do only as a treat. There’s different advice on the whole alfalfa rabbit age too. A lot of people say ween them off of alfalfa at 6 months of age but some vets say it’s fine to free freed alfalfa until the rabbit is 1. (like mine said it’s fine till 1) I personally would start cutting off alfalfa around 6-7 months and introduce greens but that’s just me.

It’s ok to let the baby eat orchard as long as he has alfalfa pellets. He should have unlimited pellets unless he’s a total little piggy.
Of course the other bun wants to eat the alfalfa hay and pellets, it’s super-yummy. It is too rich for adults thhough, so you should try and keep him away from it. He can have a little bit, as an occasional treat.

I have also heard the 6months – 1 year thing. He really seems to love the orchard more. As for the older one, I guess I’ll just have to shut the cage when they are out playing..
