Hello all.  I have a baby bunny who used to eat a decent amount of timothy hay but now she totally ignores it! She is on alfalfa based pellets, timothy, orchard, and alfalfa hay.  She used to eat timothy and alfalfa 50/50 but she has been refusing her timothy hay and only eating her alfalfa.  I got her orchard grass since I was told it was a bit sweeter but she won’t even try one! She picks out all her alfalfa hay and refuses to eat the other grass hays.  I know since she is 9 1/2 weeks old, I should give her unlimited pellets but when I reduced her alfalfa hay she would only eat her pellets so I tried to reduce her pellets and then leave the grass hays hoping she would eat them but she just picks here and there and waits until morning for me to cave and give her more alfalfa hay and pellets.  I do not want to reduce her pellets at such a young age or not give her any alfalfa hay because I want her to eat the alfalfa hay rather than no hay.  Any suggestions?  Is there a different type of hay I could try for young rabbits who are obsessed with alfalfa?  It is like bunny crack! She cannot get enough of this stuff.

        Thank you.

It is fine for her to only be eating alfalfa at this time, as she is very young. She is likely eating it because she is growing and it provides better nutrition for her at this point. However, most bunnies do prefer alfalfa over grass hays. When she becomes too old to be eating alfalfa anymore (6 months), you can remove the alfalfa pellets and hay and she will have no choice but to learn to like the grass hays. But as for now, it is fine for her to eat a lot of alfalfa and not much else, though you can continue feeding the other hays too if you think she may warm up to the idea.
You could try oat hay, many bunnies seem to find it more appetizing than other hays.

Hi, yah okie. I will let her eat as much alfalfa for now then. Hopefully when it is time for her to transition she won’t put up much of a fight… hehe
            Thank you.
