The pet taxi is coming this afternoon to pick up Chewie and take him to a pet hotel for two weeks, and I feel like I’m going to burst into tears.

I promised my mom that I would spend winter break with her and my dad and brother – in CANADA, at the friggin ends of the earth (I live in Kuwait). And in their infinite wisdom, the Canadian authorities don’t believe in buns as companion pets, so if I brought him along, he’d be in quarantine for a month or more even though I’d have to fly back home after my two week break is over. (One of the many reasons I will NEVER move back to Canadia ).

To be fair, the place he’ll be staying at is like a five-star hotel for all kinds of animals. He has a suite (as in, a big furnished room) all to himself, and he’ll be cared for according to my detailed instructions, and he’ll have hours of human interaction with his handler every day, as well as daily grooming and a vet-in-residence in case of emergencies. The pet hotel has boarded bunnies before, so they’re no strangers to our little balls of fur, but despite all this, I still feel like a horrible mom. I am, essentially, abandoning my baby for two weeks and putting his precious life in the hands of strangers who will NEVER love him and care for him the way that I do.

Those of you who have had to leave their furbabies behind for any length of time – how do you deal with it? Or should I just resign myself to feeling like a total basket-case for the duration of the holidays?  I have the sneaky feeling that I’ll end up having to dose myself with Rescue Remedy and eggnog for two straight weeks…

I’d say how you’re reacting is pretty normal…I had to leave my dog at the kennel for two days last week and thank the Lord that the kennel has a FB page and was posting pictures of him for me. And I only left him for two days I left my horses and whatnot for three weeks summer before last and that was difficult, but everyone was fine, and I did settle down after a few days. Does the hotel offer updates to keep your mind at ease?

Fortunately, yes, they have both a Facebook page I can view as a non-Facebook user, and a WhatsApp broadcast with daily updates. But still… *WHAAAAAAA*

It may be a few days, but you will calm down after a bit Or at least I did…but I was also at a private beach with all of my childhood friends and the family I actually like all day every day…so that probably helped

I live in Canada and have a house bunny who I love very much! Haven’t had to bring him on a plane anywhere though… We haven’t had to leave him yet but we will be going away for a week in May and then 3 weeks in August. We are planning on finding a capable (hopefully!) pet sitter who can come over twice a day so that way he can stay in our home. That pet hotel sounds AMAZING though!

Chom lived with my best friend for a year. I was miserable, and constantly thought of him, and wished the situation had been different. But in the end he came home, sadly not as in good condition that I left him in, which did lead to a serious strain on my friendship.

Anyway the homecoming is what makes it worth it. Look forward to seeing Chewie again, and know that you are doing the best thing instead of having him sit in quarantine.
