I’m concerned about Oz. He’s never been a thumper. In all the months we’ve had him, never once have I seen or heard him thump. He’s been introduced to loud noises, cats, dogs, and different people, but has always been a mellow laid back buns. We moved him into our room since our two female buns’ are in the living room and kitchen (one in each). He’s been in here a few weeks now. He sleeps in his cage, but has been getting play time durning the day. Last night, I went to be bed around 10:30 and laid in bed reading until around 11. As soon as I turned the light off, Buns started thumping. I know thumping comes from fear and is used as a warning, but there wasn’t anything for him to be afraid of. What are some tips that I can use to keep him from getting upset again. I’m afraid for him to be afraid because I know bunnies are known to suffer health problems/death from fear.

That’s tricky. One of my bunnies would get under my bed and thump. I made a NIC cube frame to keep him from getting under the bed, no more thumping. I never figured out why he was thumping. Try a night light?

I have had this issue as well. When one of my buns started thumping in the middle of the night I figured they were frightened of something. This happened in the same room they live in every day. The way I stopped it was getting up out of bed, picking them up, and taking them to the bathroom with me. It seemed as if it made them feel safer because I was there.
I have noticed my buns thumping at night because of an usual object they usually don’t see and the dark just making it scary, or a noise they aren’t used to. My buns know exactly who I am, and sometimes if I lean over the side of my bed to check on them they will thump and I’m guessing it is because they don’t usually see me in the darkest hours and don’t recognize me.

Lexiee, you gave me an ah-ha moment. I didn’t take into account the fact my daughter slept in our room last night because of the rain until I read about your buns being scared of your shadow at night. My daughter brought her cot and set it up between our bed and window. When I turned the light off, she would have still been slightly visible from the light outside coming through the window. I bet this is what scared him. I didn’t even think about it last night, but he was facing where the cot was when I turned the light back on.

Rookie for example is scared of the dark. And he thumps when it storms. One time he started thumping out of nowhere and I didn’t get it. I glanced out and just in the distance over the lake was a huge storm. It never really reached us but he knew.
But the dark he doesn’t like. He hangs out by the window most of the night where there is light as soon as the light is off.

Oz has never seemed scared of the dark before, but we did have some heavy rain that night! Maybe he was telling me I needed to get in my burrow? Lol. Or maybe he was scared of my daughter’s silhouette on her cot.

Maybe he just heard something that you didn’t. I hate when my buns thump in the middle of the night. Really freaks me out!
