Zeus has began to have urine leakage issues as he gets older. It seems to happen mostly when he’s sleeping. This causes dirty feet, tail, and butt. He got a butt bath for the first time this morning and luckily he actually seemed to enjoy it! I want to try to keep his cage as clean as possible.. However he still loves to dig, chew, run around, etc. I’m concerned he may try to chew and ingest puppy pads or synthetic wool flooring.

Any ideas? Most sites have suggestions for rabbits with limited mobility. He’s still quite mobile and still loves a good bun destruction lol.

Not sure how big of a space he is in. Perhaps using the large rubbermaids that go under the bed, and set them up like some folks do for the litter boxes? Put down wood pellets, then put a screen over it so the urine drains away from him and then cover in hay for softness. It might be a bit messy with using a lot of hay, but you don’t have to worry a bout him chewing or ingesting funky materials. If it’s a large space you may need to use more than one, or if it’s mostly just where he sleeps, set up that spot that way.

there are also those mats meant for dog kennels that are like grates as well, so liquid would flow through them. Some of those can be huge and then cut to size for his cage, if he’s in a big pen this might be helpful. You could then line under them with puppy pads and he wouldn’t be able to get to them.

if he starts to get urine burns, I used calendula cream on our old skunk and it worked wonders on keeping it protected between washings.

The dog kennel grate mats sound interesting. Do you know what they’re called so I can try to see what they look like?

Can I just say, I have a hard time thinking of our buns as “older”. I still remember them all being young, crazy bunnies! (Now they’re old and crazy! Lol)

Time sure flies doesn’t it? When I joined this site Zeus was two. Now, he’ll be eight this Feb. He’s still happy and spunky. The proof is in my remote missing all its buttons and the other day when he took a single bite out of every. single. shoe. I own. LOL!!!

Just thought I’d post a small update – the faux Sherpa fleece is working out well. He likes to dig and bite it, and it has some small holes, but he’s not actually ingesting it and it does a fantastic job wicking away the moisture. He seems to really love lounging on it too.
