        Hey guys,

Fox had his surgery and it went really well. It took place at noon on Thursday the 19th. He has been taking his meds and is pretty much his old self, except he is under ‘cage arrest’.  I have restricted his movements to the bottom of his cage (having removed the ramps to the upper floor) and he is allowed out only a little bit for some supervised wander around the livingroom time.

I feel bad, today, I let him out and he started to binky, but I was worried that maybe too much for him – so I put him back in his cage. He is generally content, but very irritated that he can not get out of the cage and in to the living room.

How long would you guys recommend him stay cooped up and resting? I don’t want him hurting himself, but I have a hard time seeing him so miserable – locked up – as well.

         Thanks folks.

Not knowing what kind of surgery your little Fox had, I will share my experience with my Olaf who just had his neuter on Monday. I was told to keep him subdued and on one level, as you were. The tech also told me to keep him in his cage for at least three days. If your bun had a more complicated surgery, the “quarantine” period can be even longer so I would check with your vet if that is the case.

He was sleepy and uncomfortable for the first few hours after I brought him home but perked up before bedtime. The next day he seemed exactly like his old self (greeting me at the cage door, eager for treats, etc.) I kept him in the cage all day and decided to let him out in the x-pen the following morning. He did some binkies and seemed thrilled to be free. I, too, worried it might be too much but in many ways rabbits (and all animals) have a good idea of what is too much for them. I did wait another day, however, to reinstall his second floor — just in case.

I hope this helps and suggest calling your vet to get specific instructions for Mr. Fox. I hope he is feeling better and can binky to his little heart’s content soon! Good (((vibes))) and hoppy juju.

            Pink!

Thank you so much. I forgot to mention it was a neutering! It sounds like we are on the same page. The vet said tomorrow should be fine to let him out.  But I do fret so.

One other question, not sure if this is something anyone here would know. I saw a bit of discoloration on one of his front paws. I am fairly sure it is a bit of blood. He doesn’t appear to be bleeding. I know little about the surgery side of things, is it possible when they put him under, they injected his paw with a needle?

You’re welcome. I’m not 100% sure about the paw mark, but a blood draw would make the most sense. As long as it is dark red and not fresh blood, I would just keep an eye on it. If he lets you handle his paws it might be worth taking a closer look or trying to see if it cleans up with a damp cloth. As always, when in doubt, a call to the vet is worth a good night’s sleep. :]
