Hi everyone. My 6-month-old Olaf was neutered four days ago. While he is healing well and otherwise a great bun, since the surgery he has started urinating just outside his litterbox. He will sit in the box for 5-10 minutes to deposit droppings but will step out to urinate.

I use a large corner box with a grate so he is never sitting in wet litter. Three bunnies of his size could fit in it so it isn’t too small (I check to make sure he isn’t just hanging his little tail over the edge). Seems like he is just deliberately choosing to do so right after exiting the box. I always clean up and spray with vinegar to try and remove the scent but he keeps coming back.

Any thoughts or ideas? Thank you!

A short while after a neuter, the hormone-levels in the bunny’s body will be like on a roller-coaster. It’s called a “post-neuter-craze” and it doesn’t happen with all bunnies, but with very many it does. If he pees outside the box it could be urine-marking. It’s a typical hormonal behavior and you may see more of those these next few weeks until his hormone-levels have evened out. You may see aggressive defense of territory, increased sexual circling, honking and grunting, humping etc. It’s normal. It’s a phase. It’s over in 2-4 weeks in most buns, but in some, it may last up to 8 weeks.

Thank you so much for the reply. That definitely makes sense. He has been acting pretty normal (non-aggressive, friendly) but his litter habits seem the most effected from this surge. I will update in a few weeks if it doesn’t settle down. Much appreciated. :]
