Hello Everyone!  I kind of want to get a rabbit, but I want to get a older one so It’s not as much of a commitment!  I already looked, and I decided I’d like to get a Holland Lop Rabbit!  Is getting an adult rabbit a good idea?  I’m afraid it won’t bond as well sense it’s kinda older so it wouldn’t have started bonding at a good age.  Also are they more grumpy as they get older?

I don’t think they get grumpy with age. I have 4 bunnies. 1 of the 4 refuses to bond with me. The other 3 are snuggly with me. 2 of the 4 have bonded great with me. The 3rd is nice and snuggly, and on his way to a being nicely bonded with me. The 4th strait up refuses. Each bunny is different.

My first rabbit was adult and fully grown (meaning he was more than a year old, probably older) when I got him, and it did take a long time for him to bond with me, but he did eventually. I think he’s a very happy rabbit. He loves being pet.

              How long did it take?

It took a year with Bam. But after a year it was kind of like a switch had been flipped.

Wow. That’s long. It’s been 2 years with Morgana, but since she only recently started living indoors, I’ll count it from scratch 🙂

Bam was fully adult and it’s of course not possible to say what kind of life he’d had until I found him. I suspect he’d been sitting in a cage all day, because that was how he acted – after a month or so I let him have free roam of the apt but he barely moved away from his chosen spot under the coffea-table. I had no idea about what to expect of a rabbit so whenever Bam did venture out to take a treat from me (and then run right back to under his table), I felt it was like a miracle. I thought he was super-social for a rabbit =)

I don’t know if I could have actively hurried up his development into a cuddly bun in any way. But imo Bam’s story goes to show that bunnies may need a very long time, so a new-ish owner shouldn’t give up =)

I don’t think most buns need a whole year, but we will never know what experience Bam had had of humans. He had fur mites so I’m guessing he’d not been very actively cared for. And, well, if a person dumps a bunny in the woods, that person probably isn’t the ideal bunny-owner.
