It’s not that far, but I was really hoping for a vet locally.   There is one about an hour away that works with a rabbit rescue, so I feel that one will be safe for Willow.  It’s a little expensive, but realistic, I was quoted $125.

The only one that is familiar locally seems outrageously expensive.   I got an estimate on a spay and was quoted $690.00   I could not afford that, at least not without wiping out most of our emergency cc.   Is it just me, or does that seem just plain crazy?  I had to ask her if I had that right, I was so shocked.  They assure me that is correct and does cover the exam as well….uhm

690 dollars is outrageous. It’s so expensive it almost seems like they don’t want to spay rabbits.
I think the other vet will be great, a vet that works with a rabbit rescue must have tons of spaying experience. It’s a bummer to travel that far but she’ll probably be a bit groggy afterwards so she doesn’t care that she’s in a car.

I called my old vet who did my ferrets and have seen my rats, though they are not specialists. They quoted me 190 and their exams are only 35. I definately trust them for exams. I asked how often they do bunnies and they said they probably do spays a couple times a month and everything goes smooth. It’s a smaller town, so I didnt’ expect to see a lot.

I’m torn between the traveling to a more specialized vet and going to my old vet who I already have a relationship with and will closer for emergencies and such.

Ya, the local specialist is down right crazy!! Plus that price doesn’t include an exam, which they would need to do. Exams are 100.00, so total would be getting closer to 800. Just insane.

I asked how often t hey did surgeries on rabbits and got the run around and they were indignant about it. They kept saying we only do exotics and have tons of experience. But we can’t give any estimates on how often without looking it up. I asked for a ballpark, like under 5 a week, over 50..just an estimate…thats all we do and we’ve been doing it for years is what I got back. Ok…I’m done ranting..I was just in a little shock over it all. haha

I’m about to do the same thing actually. Our rabbit rescue works with a vet that does reduced spay and neuters and I’m getting Blue neutered next week for $110, but it’s about a two and a half hour drive. Definitely soak some veggies over night so she can have something with water in it for the trip.

Every vet around us quoted us for +$450, and that’s just WAY too much for us. But almost $700? Forget it haha

And here I thought I was being ripped off for surgery for my rabbits! I really, really dislike small animal vets. I just feel like I’m always taken advantage of when I go to them. I recently had a rabbit in for surgery for something that was going to need on-going care and they didn’t even include the price of a single visit/bandage change to the nearly $1000 dollars I had to pay for X-rays and medication and the actual surgery. Their idea of going easy on me was to charge for a ‘short vet visit’ which was $30 instead of $60, when I had to pay $35 just for them to change a bandage and another fee to literally just spray his leg with some water (I can’t remember how much it was, but I think it was around another $30? Ugh). I wish my dog/cat/large animal vet was more knowledgeable about small animals, I would go to them for everything.

The last time I got a rabbit spayed it was just shy of $300 and the neuter was just over $200, I really hope the prices haven’t changed because I have two boys that need it done in the next few months! I may call up the humane society here and see if they have any cheaper options.

@Rhian I too wish I could use our dogs vet for the rabbits! They are amazing and very reasonable. Our pit years ago got poisoned from some dead fish heads while we were out fishing and he almost died. He spent a week at the vets getting fluids, meds, oxygen on and off and it was about 400. Lab work and a biopsy on what was a fatty tumor on our border collie was less than a 100 for the whole visit.

Your ordeal sounds terrible!! We are not well off at all and that would of almost wiped our emergency cc. Check with any rabbit rescues that you have near you, if you are willing to travel. They were amazingly helpful with me.
