I have one young rabbit who has really great litter habits but since the weather has gotten cold here I’ve had to close up all the windows, which has made a litter scent more apparent. It isn’t strong but I notice it more since there isn’t as much fresh air in my apartment. I empty the box every morning and wipe it down with a vinegar solution after rinsing. I also use Yesterday’s News litter and am happy with the absorption but it doesn’t seem to do anything for bunsmell.

Any tips on a better odor-absorbing litter or deodorizing ideas? I do not want to use any commercial products that have chemicals or anything with perfumes. Some people have told me that baking soda can help when sprinkled underneath, is this true/safe for bunny? Any homemade remedies would be helpful.

        Thanks!

If you use a screen on the litterbox, so the bunny can’t get to the litter you can add a layer of baking soda under the litter and that does wonders for smell.

Yesterday’s News doesn’t have a lot of odor control. You would probably get better odor control with a compressed pine pellet, like Feline Pine, or an aspen pellet, like Aspen Supreme. You can also use wood stove pellets (plain, with no accelerants) or horse stall pellets, such as Equine Pine, and both of those are very economical. If you do switch to another brand, first mix a little bit of the new with the Yesterday’s News, to get your rabbit used to the smell, then gradually switch over to the new litter.

Thank you! I just got some Aspen pellets so I will mix it with the old litter and see how it goes. Much appreciated!
