I bought my doe (Proven) a month ago from a Rabbit Breeder and since the day I got her she has been sneezing and has runny nose in one nostril. I did some research and I checked her teeth and there not abnormal and her eyes are not red in the sclera. I was thinking this is allergies or mild snuffles but I’m leaning more toward it being allergies. P.S. She is very active, eating normal, no weight loss, no discoloration of fur or loss of fur. I also have her cage by a vent but I closed it after the signs of sneezing accord since then she is still sneezing and having runny nose, not serious and not getting worse.

You should never breed an animal that has an allergy or any other health-problem that has become manifest. Only healthy fit animals should be bred, not just to get offspring with the best possible genes, but also because pregnancy is very tough on the body and and a sick bunny is less likely to be able to nurse and care for her young let alone survive.

That said, we don’t discuss intentional breeding of rabbits here. We feel that there already are so many rabbits in this world that don’t have good, loving homes, and we don’t want to add to this problem by promoting breeding. (I’m not saying that you personally wouldn’t take good care of your rabbits).

I think you should take your bun to a vet if she keeps sneezing and has a runny nose. She may need antibiotics. If it’s an allergy you need to find out what it is she’s reacting to – litter, type of hay (some buns are actually allergic to timothy hay), the pellets, certain greens, pollen, other pets etc.

Not sure how old she is, but sneezing/runny nose can also be a sign of tooth root problems. Definitely not good genes there. I agree with Bam. It would be unwise to breed her and a trip to the vet would be a good idea to figure out the true cause of the sneezing.

The topic of intentional breeding is not allowed on BB (for the reasons stated by Bam). Please don’t take it personally, the rules apply to everyone. We are a forum dedicated to house rabbits and we advocate spaying/neutering for a long and happy life. You are more than welcome to stay and ask questions regarding general care of your bunny. There are many friendly people here with a lot of experience with health issues, behavior issues, etc.

I’m sorry if I sounded harsh. I didn’t intend to. It’s as LBJ says, it’s the forum rules about breeding, nothing personal whatsoever against you, and please do ask all other kinds of rabbit questions as long as they are not about intentional breeding or meat rabbits.

What’s the runny nose and sneezing in your bun may be a variety of things, that the discharge is clear and not white and thick is of course very good. It’s still always a good idea to let a vet check out a new bun.
