I recently found some fleas in the area where my three month old Dutch buck likes to play at. I need something safe of treat him with for his size and weight. Help?

For fleas, you can get Revolution or Advantage kitten formula from your vet. NEVER use Frontline on rabbits. Revolution is a liquid that you put on the back of the rabbit’s neck, where he can’t lick it. Since fleas are only on the animal at times, and other times they are in the carpet or upholstery, you have to be very vigilant about vacuuming to get up any stray fleas and their eggs.

I agree. Revolution is very effective and considered safe. Advantage is safe too. Never, ever use Frontline.

For the carpet, you can use diatomaceous earth or boric acid. Remove bunny from the area, sprinkle on carpet, let sit for a bit, then vacuum it up. They are safe to use in areas where your bunny spends his time, but you don’t want him to come in direct contact with the powder because of the risk of inhaling the fine powder (which can cause respiratory problems).

I had a similar problem this summer. I used Advantage II small cat (5-9 lbs), as I couldn’t find the kitten formula anywhere in my area. It worked great! Remember to treat your home, like LBJ and tobyluv said. Raid makes a few different products for carpet and upholstery that I had success with, but use them in the areas where your bunny won’t be too exposed to it. VACUUM DAILY…and always empty your vacuum after each time you use it. Dump it into a separate bag and get it out of the house. I even would give the inside of the vacuum canister a spray with Raid after emptying it. The flea eggs could be left inside and could hatch. Hopefully, you may have caught this early and won’t have too big a problem. Good luck!
