I bought my new rabbit 2 packets of treats without reading the description stupidly! I found out they were suitable for rabbits only over 8 months my rabbit is going to be 3 months… are these okay to feed her?

Well it’s pretty hard to determine because I don’t know what brand they are or what the ingredients are. If you could just list the ingredients I might know a bit more.

I’m kinda curious why it wouldn’t be OK for younger rabbits. What treats are they? LBJ is great at deciphering ingredients…no offense to anyone else. Just saying she’s made it sound so easy when I reached out for help.

I’ve never heard of that brand. I trust Oxbow treats. I get the barley biscuits or simple rewards baked treats. I also use the American Pet Diner Smaks treats. I usually get both of these from drsfostersmith.com. They are also available at other sites and some stores, and here in the BB store. One other treat that I get occasionally is from bunnybytes.com, their fruitables pumpkin treats.

                      I wouldn’t use those… glucose… bad juju… low protein low fiber – useless.
I don’t buy commercial treats for my bunnies because Lancelot has a sensitive belly, and was fed a horrible diet before I adopted him. So I don’t tease him by feeding the other 3 different treats as him. My bunnies loooove bell peppers. So I use pieces of bell pepper as treats.
As Tobyluv writes, – Oxbow and American Pet Diner are trusted brands. But even with those, I have noticed that Oxbow has their premium foods which have better ingredients, and their less expensive foods that have ingredients I wouldn’t feed my bunnies.
Here’s how I see it… Bell peppers are cheap. 60 cents a pepper. I can get many treats from them. I can cut into treat size pieces and dehydrate, and it is more healthy, and cheaper, then commercial treats.

If you want to buy treats, Oxbow does have some really good products. Their lavender/chamomile treats are what I would use if I bough treats. They only controversial ingredients in that treat are cane molasses, chicory, and flax. But it’s hard to get away from those, as they are needed to make the ingredients stick together. Protein 12%, fiber 23%. Same with their cranberry rosemary medley, and the papaya medley. I wouldn’t use their barley, timothy, or veggie treat for bunnies. Too many starchy ingredients. The strawberry and banana treats are freeze dried. If I gave fruit to my bunnies, I would dehydrate my own.

American Pet Diner has grass cubes (I would use those), and baked cookies (Smaks treats). The cookie ingredients all look good – except that they have barley and rye flour. All baked treats have sugar in some form to keep the cookie together, and to make it attractive. If your bunny does not have a sensitive belly, these would be fine in small amounts. But I wouldn’t feed these to Lancelot because of the rye and barley.

                      That’s my 2 cents.

Vanessa–do your buns like dehydrated foods as well as their fresh counterparts? I never thought to dehydrate little bits of veg and fruits for treats before–it sounds like such a good idea! Although I wonder if the fruits might get a bit too concentrated, sugar-wise?

Also, ivybunny, you might want to see what fruits/veggies your bun really digs, instead of going for packaged stuff. My guys lose their minds over carrots. It’s kind of ridiculous, actually! I use them as a sort of goodnight snack, just a little chunk off the end for each bun. They also love banana–I’ll give them a little bit when I peel one for myself. Pineapple, apple, bell peppers… all sorts of goodies. Just make sure they only get a small amount of fruit a day! They are treats, after all :]

I use a tiny bit of carrot to get Willow to go to her pen at night. She’s still young so she can’t have much for treats yet. But really a sprig of parsley makes her happy. I don’t really see any reason to give store bought goodies when there are so many fruits and veggies that are better for them and they seem to love just as much.

                                Smaks Berry treats

Ingredients: Barley and Rye flour, strawberries and blueberries ,Vegetable oil, flax meal, molassas, Brewer’s yeast, Hay meal, Prebiotics (inulin), Yucca Extract (No added wheat, corn or soy)

Not much different than the original treat Ivybunny posted or any commercial baked treat for that matter.

You can bake treats with no more sugar than natural fruit puree, no oils, yeast, sugar ( molasses but it isn’t very economic so the companies take short cuts to make a profit.

Apparently smaks doesn’t know who to spell molasses lol, just noticed that !

Oxbow is even worse using ” dried fruit ” in the cookies, that boots the sugar content by double. Eventually you could try baking your own as I do. It gets easy to do after some practice

For those bunny friends who live “over the pond”.. Pets At Home is the biggest and most trusted (now apparently) pet shop in the UK and Ireland.
It has all sorts of goodies, good and bad and they really care for their animals and their shoppers (you can tell they are all animal lovers)
That’s the information newsflash over with … :o)

I’m sure the false-carrot carrot-sticks fed little and not so often (not the whole packet in one go!) as rare treats won’t do any harm.

I give Zou natural veg and fruit as treats but every now and again she gets lucky and has a cereal stick, commercially produced that i’m sure isn’t 100% goodness. So its like the equivalent of a McDonalds or a pizza for us (or fish and chips, or a pub meal, or a Cream Tea…. hummmm) : one a month won’t do any harm if the rest of the diet is correct.

IvyB – where abouts are you in the UK (it’s so I can come and pinch your bunny mat!!) ? I’m a Surrey chick !
Do you have a photo of the new arrival? (or have you posted it and I’ve missed it?)

@Digboat – Dehydrating does concentrate the food as the moisture is removed. So I woudl only dehydrate something that I would be willing to feed fresh. When I as still giving my bunnies fruit, they would get only the size of a large grape. So half a strawberry, 1 grape, etc. 1 of that size per day. Once you have dehydrated half a strawberry, it is quite tiny. So that is how much I gave my rabbits in dehydrated food. I guess that would be a piece of dehydrated fruit the size of a quarter. Now that I don’t give them fruit, I dehydrate veggies. I’ve done bell pepper. They love it. I don’t make it sticky – I dry it till it’s hard and dry like hay. Not moist like dried fruit that we eat. I don’t want it sticking to their teeth.
Since it is concentrated, they like it more.

What a sweet picture 🙂 the blue blankie looks sooo clean!!!! The only reason I haven’t taken pictures of my bunnies living area – is that it’s a mess with hay and bunny things! But I guess so are most of our bunny abodes 😉

Just saw this thread. Yeah, I would steer clear of those. I mean, they probably wouldn’t do irreversible harm if it was a one time thing. But they aren’t a good treat to give.

I use Oxbow treats and APD cookies. You can also offer small pieces of fruit starting at 12 weeks. Not too much though as it might cause some tummy issues with young bunnies.

                                              Ivy is darling, BTW!
