Okay so I think in the past that I have mentioned Chom’s issue with peeing. And in the past few months I’ve run into a hardcore issue with him. One I had seen once in a while in the past, but now it is becoming frequent. His bunny bum, once so cute and fluffy, is matted, and soaked with pee and constantly wet. I’ve tried trimming his fur, thinking maybe it was getting too long, but even then it didn’t help. I’ve resorted to giving him a bath every other week, because he just reeks of urine, no matter how hard I try to clean up his fur.

Anyone have any ideas on how he is doing this, and also how to stop it? Late tonight I’m gonna shave the entire area bald, to hopefully ease the issue, and easily clean him with some wipes my vet approved. I’m just so worried about him enduring something like urine scald. That and he has become quite stinky. Speckles stopped grooming him since this started to happen, because I think the smell grosses her out.

I should mention one thing, it is not his litter,or litterbox. We use litterboxes that all have grids overs the litter, forcing them to not sit in wet litter!

Here is the bummy issue pictures, so everyone can understand what I’m talking about. There are 3 images. Chom’s bummy pics

And now onto the foot issue. I noticed yesterday, on both feet he has a weird, almost blister-like sore on each foot. One foot is far less red, and sadly that was the one I had gotten a picture of, so I circled the area. It wasn’t raw flesh, a seeping wound, or anything. It was just a small circle, that wasn’t covered with fur, which looked like highly aggravated skin. My first thought was it looked like the beginning of sore hocks, but that makes no sense, seeing as in my room I have those foam puzzle mats as the flooring, and even in my living room, which is hardwood, I have a rug for him to rest on. He hasn’t been hopping weird or anything, but clearly touching the area bothers him, as he will snort and try to bite me if I do, even gently.

To be safe yesterday I put triple antibiotic on the areas after cleaning them, put lots of gauze for padding, and then wrapped the feet up, but one of the bindings came off, which is the foot I used for the picture. Today it is much less enflamed and red than yesterday. I’ll be rebinding and repadding his foot shortly.

Here are three pics of his poor tootsie… click here to see his tootsie

I’d take him to the vet, but right now my funds are insanely tight, since I recently had mouth surgery that pretty much put me in a lot of debt. So any and all advice and thoughts would be highly appreciated!

this looks like something that needs a vets assistance. I think the urine issue is very likely medical related. Maybe kidneys, urinary tract infection or stones..something is causing it unless he’s old and isn’t able to get around, but I don’t think that is what you are describing.

Hock issues, from what I understand are not always caused by hard surfaces. If they are not walking correctly due to bone malformation or a temporary cause, such as pain it will put pressure in the wrong places. As a guess, it’s probably related to the urinary issue. Probably causing pain and making him walk funny to get pressure off the part that hurts.

I’m sorry that Chrom and you have to go through this. I hope you can find whats wrong and get it corrected.

Well Mimsey he is about to officially be 3 years. So I doubt age is a thing that will be factored in here.

I’ll save up a bit of money, and make a vet appointment, because I am worried about his bummy. He has never been good about using a litterbox in the past, and still isn’t too good. I’ve noticed in the past he would occasionally flop and roll in his pee, so I’m wondering if he is doing the same thing, seeing as I just found a nice big wet spot on his back now.

Okay so I spoke with my vet and we are going in. I haven’t made an appointment quite yet, because I need to find a ride to get to the vet. But she can take him as early as tomorrow morning.

I also just found urine on his ears. >.>

What to do with this bunny?!

I’m glad you’re taking him in! It does sound like something a vet needs to investigate. Many many vibes for him, and please keep us posted!

Thanks bam. I’m just getting nervous at all this urine appearing on him. It’s bothersome with how severe it is.

To be safe I’m still shaving his bummy tonight, and I’m bringing my pics I took to the vet to show her what I was talking about. I”m just scared he will get urine scald. The fur is just soaking wet and reeks.

Right now the biggest issue is finding a ride to the vet, since our normal person’s car is broken down.

I’m sorry that it’s difficult for you to find a ride
If you can, try to get a fresh urine-sample to bring with you to the vet. (Even if he has urine on him, they’ll need a proper sample to run tests on.)
It’s great that you’re saving the pix and shave him for his comfort. I think you can put a barrier cream like bag balm on him when you’ve cleaned him, to protect his skin on the parts where you don’t put antibiotic cream (if you’re not putting that on the whole area).

                        Antibiotic cream is going everywhere.

And yeah our normal doesn’t have a car atm, our other friend we are currently not speaking to, and everyone else is working…

Ugh. So we have his bum half shaved ATM. Gave him a break because my razor was overheating, and I was worried I would burn him. And he was fighting the $*&! outta us. But oh my god i couldn’t even use the guard on the shaver, because the fur was so matted that the guard kept getting stuck.

Oh dear. Urinary incontinance is a medical problem. Sore hocks can sometimes be caused simply by the weight of the rabbit. Rex, new zealand, and california rabbits, are prone to sore hocks, just because of their weight distribution.
I had a rabbit who was paralyzed in his rear legs and was completely incontinent. I bathed him 4 times a day, he wore a diaper, it was horribly sad. There are many things that could cause incontinence. Urine scald is a serious side effect. I would definitely keep him shaved, and use a rash/barrier cream. I used a diaper for the same weight baby, and cut a little slit for his tail. I put it on backwards, to make for easy changings. I do hope Chom’s problem is resolvable.

It’s not like he is peeing randomly. He is going normally, just.. Somehow getting his bummy all sorts of wet in ways I didn’t know was possible. I’m convinced he is rolling or flopping in it. It is the only way to explain the tips of his ears getting wet with pee.

Yeesh… I was quite perplexed when you said it was on his ears. Hopefully it is a behavioral thing and not a medical thing.

I dunno… you said the litter box has a grate so they can’t sit in wet litter… waiting to hear what the vet says…
