My dad said that my rabbit MUST be vaccinated. However, I know that rabbits in North America dont need vaccines, but he says I MUST get him vaccinated. I asked a vet and they said they didnt need vaccines, however my dad said that vet was stupid (He’s NEVER been there, and that clinc savrd my hamster’s life.)

Do rabbits need vaccines in Canada? Is there even any?

I don’t think there are any vaccines approved/made for rabbits anywhere. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. My vet never even mentioned vaccines for my bunny.

I believe there are vaccines for rabbits in the UK and Europe/ Austrailia area I think for some dieases. But US and Canada (North America) there isnt any. It isnt needed since the diesases arent known to be here.

              None!

There are vaccines available in England-as there are released viruses to kill rabbit populations-two I think, myxomatosis and rabbit viral hemorrhagic disorder. Someone more in the know can correct my spelling and info!
There are also viruses in Australia, but I believe most vaccines are illegal (and some parts of Australia it’s illegal to have a rabbit)-I think calcivirus vaccine (sp?) is legal to give.

I’m in Canada, and I have three different exotic vets who treat my bunnies; I can really confirm there are no vaccines here for them, and no need for it

That’s fair-not everything you read online is correct! Maybe if he calls, the answer will satisfy him. Make sure he talks to a vet and not reception-they don’t always know and usually pass on info that relates to dogs and cats (such as fasting prior to surgery) that is incorrect.

That’s a good question. I read on here about someone getting their bunny vaccinated and wondered myself.

I’ve read many times that rabbits in Canada and the US dont need vaccines. None of my vets have vaccines for buns.

It’s extremely sweet of your dad to say you should vaccinate your rabbit! Give him a hug!

Kokaneeandkahlua is correct though. In Europe, there is a double-vaccine, against myxomatosis and rabbit hemorragic disease. In Australia, there is a vaccine against rabbit hemorragic disease, but the myxomatosis vaccine is not allowed under the law.
Both in Europe and in Australia there are frequent outbreaks among wild rabbits of these two 2 diseases, especially myxomatosis. These diseases were purposely inmplanted as a means to control wild rabbit populations, because rabbits were (and still are very much so in Australia) regarded as vermin.

In North America, the wild rabbits are not of the same species as wild rabbits in Europe and Australia and New Zealand, oryctolagus cuniculus, the same species that our house rabbits belongs to. Your wild rabbits are not as sensitive to these 2 diseases so they won’t cause epidemics in them. You have had outbreaks of the diseases in domestic rabbits, but the diseases are not considered a big enough risk for the vaccines to be recommended. The vaccines are for that reason currently not marketed in North America.

Here in the UK we have vaccines for rabbits. I have never had any of mine vaccinated because as house rabbits in an urban area there really is no need. Myxo was released deliberately here in Scotland several years ago to control the population of wild rabbits (what a horrible thing for people to do) so it is recommended here if you live in a rural area or have an outside bun as some insects can carry the disease and it can also be brought in on mud on people’s shoes but in the city its highly unlikely so I don’t get mine done. However if you are boarding your buns most places wont take them unless they are vaccinated.

I live in the Netherlands, also in an urban area. Here it is recommended to vaccinate your Rabbit each year. The country is small so contagion of diseases can go fast. My rabbit is a housebun, but even when I’ve been outside and my bunny not, there is a chance he could get Myxo as kirstyol said. Every year there are different outbreaks of Myxo overhere and that’s why I think it is better to be safe than sorry and will vaccinate my bunny each year.

I’m in the south of Sweden, so I too vaccinate my buns yearly. There are always outbreaks of myxomatosis among wild rabbits here in the autumn, so vaccination is highly recommended even for indoors bunnies.
