Hello. Thanks for this site. I live in a rented trailer in Ga. Moved in a few months ago and one day these kids were chasing two bunnies..a white one and a black one. Reason I know is because the kids were pushing the bottom structure of the trailer (the bunnies ran under the trailer and one just kinda stayed I guess) and we came outside to see what’s going on etc. Don’t know what happened to the white one but I started seeing the black one more. He was standoffish at first but now he runs up within a foot or two when I pull up from work. It’s really sweet I think he knows when I get off. I give him carrots all the time. When I first saw him he was missing hair in a patch on his spine. Now it’s fine. I’m moving very soon. I feel really bad though and I’m wondering if I should take him? I’m allergic to cat dog hair (I sound like I have a cold) but I’m really concerned about him if I leave. I’m not really sure what to do about him. What if they fix the part where the bunny lives, what will the bunny do then? Should I try n take him anyway. I don’t know the first thing about bunnies honestly. My bf thinks I could prob catch him in a cage because he comes near to me. He thinks we can keep him in a cage which is odd bc he doesnt like animals as pets at all!! Any suggestions would b great.
I used the search feature and searched bunny under house etc so if there’s already a thread I apologize. Thanks in advance.

          Hi, Kaye,
I think a rescue is your answer. If you can find a way to catch him, such as putting the carrot and some hay into a carrier, or even one of the cardboard ones they use at pet stores, and close it so he won’t escape, you can take him on a car ride. Look in your town or city for the nearest animal rescue or shelter that takes rabbits. It’s just a few phone calls to find one. Or, look for a vet listed under ‘exotics’ and ask them where a nearby shelter is that takes rabbits. You can bring him there before you move. Once there, he will be examined by a vet and they will make every effort to rehome him. If he were a wild bunny, you should leave him, but from his coloring it sounds like another person abandoned a domestic bunny, so a rescue is a good place for him to be well cared for.

Domestic bunnies don’t have a very good chance of surviving on their own (predators/no food or clean water) so it would be best to either take him/her in (bunnies are a big commitment!) of bring her/him into a shelter like RabbitPam suggested.

Definitely try to rescue the bunny, even if you can’t keep him, otherwise he probably won’t last too long out there on his own. Have something secure to put him in right at hand, and try to lure him with more carrots, or you could try apple or banana slices. Most rabbits love those. You could also try cilantro or parsley. Most rabbits do not like to be held and will struggle, often getting loose and possibly getting injured, so it’s important that you either lure him into a cage or carrier, or firmly grasp him and get him into a cage or carrier. Thanks for caring and good luck.

If your allergy isn’t that major, only a runny nose or sneezing, I would bring him. You can confine him to a small room in the house where it is totally rabbit safe. That way he will be indoors, he will be near you (hes seems kind of attached), he won’t be in cage, and his fur will only be in one room so you won’t be constantly leaving. If that isn’t an option, then like MoxieMeadows and RabbitPam, I would take him to a shelter.

If you do confine him to a single room, you can litter-box train him, you may want to research that before you make a commitment.

You could also put one or two air purifiers in the room that he’s in, to help reduce allergens if you decide to keep him.

Also, please let us know if we could be more of a help with what you choose to do! And tell us what you decide.

Here is a thread on catching a stray bunny: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/133642/Default.aspx

I agree with the others. Whether you decide to keep him or not, I don’t think you should leave him there. He needs someone to care for him, preferably indoors. If that isn’t possible, then a shelter should be able to find him a home for you.

Do keep us updated on what happens. We would love for you to keep him, but we understand that that isn’t always possible. We want him to be safe though, so do try to get him.

Dogs and cats are much more likely to cause allergies than rabbits. There is a good chance that you won’t be allergic to him/her. You could do a trial run and see if you are allergic to him/her and if you aren’t, you’ve got yourself a wonderful bunny.

Do avoid timothy hay though, because that is a really common allergen.
