        Hi all,

I’ve recently bought a small bale of hay from a Pet shop were I normally get my Rabbits food from. First time I’ve bought hay from there. In the hay bag is these very small white bugs/insects that crawl around. They are tiny and move quickly around the box. Anyone know what they are? They are so small I can’t get a photo of them.

Normally I freeze a fresh bale of hay to kill any insects, but this bale is to big to fit in my freezer.

        Regards,

        Widget.

I don’t know what they are, but I’d take it back and complain.

Probably white flies or lice. Mites are too small to usually see. I don’t think there is anyway around getting bugs on hay. I have the same issue with grain moths on my bird food unless you freeze it or the place you get it from uses a lot of insecticides.

Do you have a place to keep it away from your animals and you and then freeze a little at a time? Most of the bugs will be harmless, but then there is always a chance that it’s one that bites, or can cause an issue with the bunnies, you or your home.

I’ve been wondering myself how people deal with the larger bales of hay.

I’d take it back to the shop and tell em about it. Even thought thwy are most likely harmless, you should inform the shop, they might give you a refund on it. It’s never good to find bugs in your hay :/

Ditto the others. Take it back.
