So I am a fairly new bun mommy- we have always been dog people and after loosing my beauty Layla to cancer over a year ago my 10 yr old started begging for another pet. I did my research and we all decided a rabbit was going to be a great fit for our house and lifestyle. After having Lloyd for over 6 months and doing a considerable amount of research I realized that our sweet little Lloyd might just want a friend so in July we started hunting down rescues…. About 4 weeks ago we found South Florida Rabbit Rescue and adopted a sweet cuddly boy named Ninja…. Here is our “tail” of bonding.

*TIP* Don’t think like a human!

I pretty much acted like one of those horrible parents who is just a ball of nerves…..I know I made their first few “dates” a disaster! I don’t even have any photos because I was too scared to put the broom and oven mitts down long enough to simply observe…. Don’t make that same mistake….. so I will fast forward to two weeks ago….

We had them separated by having a pen down the middle of the room they were in and I made sure all avenues were blocked so they couldn’t fight or what not. Well this bun mom underestimated her bun-daughter Lloyd and one night while my husband and I were upstairs getting our son to bed I heard the sound of the pen door being rattled. Well she did this a lot so we didn’t think anything of it. We went downstairs an hour later and BINGO Miss Lloyd and her “new” friend Ninja were jumping around together! I almost had a heart attack thinking they might fight or charge but to my surprise they both hopped over to me to see what was going on! She was still cautious of him and did a bit of tail wagging to ward him from getting too close but all in all they seemed to have accepted each other. I realized that this was Lloyds way of saying “Mom I got this, I am a big girl and think I can figure out if this guy is good. I promise to behave myself and not scratch his eyeballs out!” Once I had COMPLETELY removed myself from their bonding they just kind of did it on their own…. we still did all of the recommended stuff like stress dates in the car, swapping cage areas and supervised dates but in the end they both showed me that they knew how be rabbits and they really wanted to be together! Now they are inseparable! I was still keeping them apart at night and I woke up one morning to find the top off Lloyds night cage (they are free range during the day and penned at night) and her sleeping side by side with Ninj. So a week ago we put them together at night for the first time and the rest is history!

I hope my cute no so special but kinda funny journey helps you with your own journey in bonding your buns! If my email ever works I will be uploading pics- they don’t want to upload from my phone

Thank you!!! I felt like such a dunce cap during the first few days but now I feel like I could bond any rabbit  I have to laugh at the fact that they just kinda did it on their own…. what do we silly humans know anyway!!!
