So about two weeks ago I brought my 11 week old Holland Lop to the vet. Her symptoms were runny dirty nose and occasional sneezing. He prescribed her 6 shots of penicillin to combat the “snuffles”. Her last shot is tomorrow and her nose has had almost no change and could even be worse. Could this be a reaction to using wood pellet litter that absorbs and turns to sawdust once moisture hits it? I’ve read that some wood bedding and litter can irrate their respitory and nose. I am using Kaytee wood brand pellets. What do you guys think?

Not sure at all but you can check out other brands of litters and buy the smallest bag and test it out. It would be too much for her to go through everything and then it just turns out to be her litter.

Definitely can’t hurt to change the litter, even just to rule it out. I like Yesterdays News.

Although I also use stove pellets as litter with no adverse effects ( the oils that cause liver damage are in shavings ) it doesn’t necessarily mean a bunny couldn’t possibly have an allergy to wood ? Trying the paper pelleted form is probably a good idea as others have said, to rule it out.

I would try a new litter just in case, but also ask your vet about having a culture and sensitivity test done if the discharge is still present. It’s possible that the penicillin is not effective against what she has. The vet might need to do another round of a different med.
