I haven’t been on the forums for a while, it’s my final semester of college and it’s been kicking my butt! But before I took an absence, I was talking about how I had just gotten a bird, a Cockatiel, named Schubert. Because for some reason my apartment complex is 100% okay with birds, but rabbits are WAY too exotic and not allowed at all. I decided it wasn’t worth it sneaking Meki in in the case of an emergency and she’s getting a little older so all the moving around wouldn’t be fair to her.

When I first got him, it was closer to my parents’ house with Meki so I brought him there to spend the night before heading back to my city. So when I showed Meki Schubert (Meki was in her hutch, Schubert was in his travel cage), Schubert got spooked when Meki turned her head, flapped his wings, which spooked Meki into freaking out and running into her “bedroom” portion of her hutch. *sigh* Probably for the better though, as I’ve been reading that some rabbits carry a parasite? sickness? that doesn’t affect them but can kill a bird if they catch it.

Now let me tell you, I’ve had parakeets before, but for the most part I’m a bunny mommy. So imagine my panic and fear when for the first WEEK we had Schubert, he wouldn’t eat or drink anything. And a cockatiel forum, the breeder, pet stores, etc. all told me that this is typical as a new bird gets settled in, but they don’t understand that when Meki stopped eating for 10 hours I was in hysterics because of the danger it causes for rabbits.

He’s much better now. He’s hand tamed so he comes out of his cage and hangs out with us on the couches or our shoulders (again, why is this okay but rabbits aren’t?). He’s also been picking up songs well. So far he knows the Wolf Whistle, the Chocobo theme from Final Fantasy, the Addams Family theme (*click click*!), and most recently he’s started saying “peekaboo!” much to my chagrin at 6am on my day off.

I still feel horribly guilty about leaving Meki at home with my parents, though. They take such good care of her and she binkies all the time, but I feel so bad bringing one pet here without my bunny =( And she absolutely is jealous because when I come home she gets super huffy at me and makes me EARN her love and attention. It’s good to know that Meki is still a spoiled princess even when I’m not around.

        But here’s Schubert everyone!

Schubert! So cute! And he sings! I have no experience with birds, but they seem so great. As for Meki, if she’s happy at your parents’, she’s happy. And that’s all that’s important really. Even if it’s sad for you that you can’t have her with you.

Cute!!!! I’ve seen lots of YouTube vids of cockatiels. They are so full of personality!

Lovely! I had 13 parakeets, 4 cockatiels, and 2 lovebirds when I was a teenager. Today, I have 2 coturnix quail, 2 Speckled Mousebirds, 2 Gouldian Finches, 2 Zebra Finches, 2 Society Finches, 4 Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu Finchs, 2 Owl Finches, 4 Bourke Parakeets, and my boyfriend has 4 cockatiels 🙂 My BF has his birds in a spare room. It’s the bird room. I have a 240 square foot outdoor aviary. During winter, I bring the birds in, except for the quail. I have converted bedroom closets to winter cages, and next month I’m converting the recessed (deep) book shelf area into a winter cage, coz it has better lighting options. I have to try very hard to stop myself from converting the outdoor aviary to a waterfowl habitat for mandarin ducks – coz I’m in a residential zone! The aviary is planted, with a ground-level bird bath that is hooked to spouts with a timer, so twice a day, water jets turn on and spray it clean, and refill it. Every winter I renovate and upgrade the aviary. I’ve torn it down to lay 3 tons of san, paving stones, and re-roof it. Next I’m considering an entirely new structure with a shingle roof. I’m debating between a single rectangular structure, or joining 2 pentagon-shaped structures… Birds are an addiction…
                  Have fun!

Wow Vanessa, that’s a lot of birds! LOL I have experience with parakeets from when I was younger, but most of my bird experience is with raptors.

I have to agree, a lot of birds! But of course I had to look up photos of all the birds I didn’t know. I must say the Owl Finches and Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu finches are stunning (as along with your others, but those stuck out the most to me).

I just have to say Meka, that I smiled when I read Schubert can sing the chocobo theme song. What a clever birdie.

Lol, he can’t sing it very clear yet, but he’s got the beginning and the end down. For a bird, he can be quite the ham!

Cutie! He’s already learnt quite a bit. I really like cockatiels. I considered getting one after visiting a friend who has one. He’s so entertaining. But so far Ive resisted.

Cockatiels are cool birds. Ver chill, personable, and interact well with people. Finches don’t interact with people. But Cockatiels are gentle enough that my boyfriends cockatiels will be able to merge with my flock…
I’ve thought about raptors too LBJ10, but as Jerseygirl said… I have to resist…
Enjoy your bird Mekatatenbun. Looks like a real sweetie.

OMG, that’s so cute! My parakeets did nothing but squawk, never really sang anything. LOL

Vanessa – Oh yes, I would love to have a falconers permit. Is that weird? All of the raptors I have worked with were through my old job. I miss them though.

Oh my gosh, actual raptor birds. I was thinking you guys were making a joke and alluding to velociraptors

and I was assuming you were joking about smaller, pet birds lol. Hey, Schubert can be pretty fierce looking sometimes…

LBJ10 – bizarrely enough, I’ve had four parakeets over the course of my life so far and only one, my current one Zeus, has ever learned to talk. He sings away and just throws out a garbled “pretty pretty” or “Heyyyy Zeusy!” and most unnerving is that he recently just started to “laugh” just like my dad, so it’ll be 10 at night and I’m sitting on the couch reading or something and I hear my dad’s “hehehehe!” coming from Zeus’ cage. I had no idea parakeets could even mimmick sounds like that

vanessa – birds ARE an addiction. But then again, so are bunnies. My boyfriend doesn’t even allow me into the small animal section of a humane society in case I start begging for another bunny (“Well, if we move this here and that there, then Meki can have this space and the new bunny can be over here and everything will work out perfectly, please, I need him.”)

Nope, dead serious. Hehehe! Yes, I worked will owls, hawks, falcons, and there was also an eagle. And the vultures. Can’t forget the vultures.

I don’t think a lot of parakeets do learn to mimic stuff. Some do, but I heard they have to be really strongly bonded to their person. Mine loved each other more than they ever loved me. LOL

:-((( I went away this weekend and my cat broke my mousebirds out of their cage. Killed one. I’m sooo sad. I fixed the cage situation, but wow. What a blow. Speckled mousebirds are rare in aviculture in the USA, Hard to find. I’m so bummed for the pair. He was killed, she is alone now. I always pair up my animals. So I need to find her a new mate (not likely), or sell her to someone who already has speckled mousebirds. Bummer. She isn’t tame and I don’t want her to be alone. I’m so sad. Searching for a new pal for her.

How is Schubert settling in MeketatenBun?

Uhhhhh well in classic bird fashion, he found out that if he screams into his metal food dish it makes a ~*fun noise*~, so that’s his new thing. It basically is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRsfOGJ5lZg but smaller, quieter, and more metallic.

He also started beat boxing?????!? He’ll start going “pssh-a pssh-a pssh-a pssh-a” and head bang along to it and sometimes I think about how quiet and relaxing Meketaten is, especially if I’m up late. Meki will be all like “oh boy, you’re going to play with me, but we’ll keep it quiet because other’s are sleeping =3” while Schubert is just “PEEKABOO? Peekaboo! Peeka– pssh-a pssh-a pssh-a pssh-a pssEEKABOO”. But I suppose he’s settling in well, he’s learning to love his new home, I think =)

Omg, Meka, I’m dying here about the beat boxing! Lmao!!! It makes me think of our bunnies when they get a new chew toy and its surround sound chewing all around the house. Or when they learn new “fun sounds” and do it for 10 minutes straight. Lol
