Hey all…so… I was on the forum when I first got mango 2 years ago. Since then it’s been heaven except for 2 brief spills of gi stasis (which strangely seems to be craison related for my healthy eater. I planned to keep mister single for life but now a friend of mine was given a 4 year old girl who seems to really HATE her. So I’m considering taking her in. HOWEVER… I have a few questions. Firstly mango is not neutered. 2/3 vets in my area said “it’s just like neutering a cat” which made me decide against it. Now I don’t want to take the risk as I’m really well bonded to him (lying on the bed with me not understanding why he only gets one hand and not both for cuddles). The girl is also unaltered… so my first question is whether I can still bond them if I have her altered and not him. And can I test whether they will bond before having her altered or not. Also… He is completely free range so if she is in a cage will they still bond if he is free range and I bond them in the bathroom? We also travel about 500km every 2 weeks. Mango is use to it as he has his own room at both homes. Will I have to rebond at the other house? Mainly I want to know if it’s a good idea or if I should let her find another home? ( don’t want a baby and none of the spca’s have buns for adoption. So its her or just human cuddles.

They both have to be spayed and neutered to avoid aggression and territorial behaviors. You have to bond them in a neutral space in the beginning.

As Reeem, said, you will have to neuter Mango, as well as having the female rabbit spayed before you can try bonding them. Would you have to pay for the spay surgery as well as Mango’s neuter surgery? That could be expensive. You would probably have to wait a month after their surgeries to begin bonding. All the hormones should be flushed out of them then, along with any aggression or humping desires, although some humping can occur during bonding as part of establishing who is the boss. There wouldn’t be a way to test whether they will like each other beforehand, so you would just have to hope that they would bond and love each other. All of my bonding experiences have been quick and easy, but I know that isn’t always the case.

Thank you for the replies. I’ve read articles about bonding so basics aren’t a problem. It’s just the neutering which is the big question. The cost isn’t an issue. It’s about R1600 for both and that’s not outrageous. I’ve decided against it though. With my work schedule it’s just not viable now.
