Hello! I am new here, hope I chose the right place to post this…

I’ve had buns before and recently moved from New York to Oregon and I haven’t had a bun since college. So I went to the humane society to check it out, and fell in love with Cheddar! He was listed as a checkered giant, but he is not. Does anyone know what he is?

Here are some photos. He weighs approximately 12 pounds, and he turned 2 on September 15.

Not sure of the breed, but no wonder you fell in love! Those ears! Squeeee!

What an adorable “little” guy! I absolutely love his ears!

As far as being a New Zealand goes, his ears would definitely fit the bill shape-wise, but they look a little too large for a NZ. He’s also not red in the “NZR sense” of the word, he’s more yellowy than a (broken) Red should be. I can’t seem to find the distinctive little hairs sticking up around the base of his ears that most New Zealands have. 12lbs is also quite large for a NZ, they’re usually around 9-10lbs. He definitely has the right body shape for a New Zealand, though, and his head looks very much like my purebred NZR boy’s!

Since he’s certainly got the size for it, I’d place my money on him being an NZR(/NZW)-Belgian giant mix.

twelve pounds? He’s a big boy, with some big impressive ears. I’m no good at breed id, so I couldn’t say what he is except “very handsome.” hope that helps lol

Though he is obviously very very far from meeting breed standards for a checkered giant, it’s possible that he has some in him. There are many possibilities though. He’s definitely a mix, it’s just hard to place a mix of what. 12 lbs is big, so my best guess would be a mix of a couple of giant breed, not a giant and a smaller.

Well the coloring isn’t exactly right (could also be the lighting in the pics), but I’m still going with broken red NZ is at least in there somewhere. As redbunbun said, he has the shape. He could be mixed with another large rabbits breed or he could be a reject for not meeting breed standards. Especially if it was an irresponsible breeder “trying new things”. I believe that is what the case was with Wooly. The breeder was trying to get BEW Jersey woolies. Wooly is Vienna marked and his ears are too long.

How about English Spot ? They’ve got markings like that.

Bunnies can be so, so beautiful.

He reminds me of my rex. Dusti is a mini rex, but Cheddar looks a lot like him in shape! He is absolutely adorable!
