        Hi all,

So Snowball had his neuter almost 3 weeks ago and two post op-checks in which everything was looking great. Last night however, I checked his wound as usual and noticed it was much more pink and possibly less ‘shriveled’ than usual.  I also noticed he was way more jumpy about being checked down there whereas normally he’s pretty chill. He seemed to be eating and pooping fine but some poops looked more ‘moist’ than the usual dry pellets. So we saw the vet today and when he tried to feel the sack, Snow was NOT having it. So it does seem like he’s in pain.

Vet doesnt think there’s any swelling and that the pinkness could be a result of his licking down there, something he stopped doing a few days post-surgery but appears to be doing more of today. As for his dodgy-looking pellets, vet thinks they could be a leadup to diarrhea. Therefore he sent us away with the same routine as post-neuter: 3 days metacam (0.26ml) & fibreplex (x3/day).

I should add here that our usual vet was absent today and this guy did not appear to be at all rabbit-savvy. That said, I do think he has a point about going in with the metacam today as a preventative measure – Im just uneasy about pain meds for rabbits, being so sensitive as they are.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is metacam in that dosage generally safe to give? FYI, he’s a dwarf hotot of around 1kg in weight.

Any help would be hugely appreciated

I’d suggest using the metacam for his discomfort until your usual vet is back. Absent, not on vacation for a week, right? Just see how it responds to the med and if it gets worse or if he gets diarrhea. If he isn’t better, get in to see your regular vet right away and get a diagnosis you are comfortable with. Your bunny may have been tender there post-neuter, even after a few weeks. It takes the hormones a month to fully calm down, so he may have had a surge that effected his behavior. I would feel better having the vet who knows him checking him out again.

I totally agree with Pam. Metacam is both a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory med, so it seems like a good idea to use that.
Then go back to your regular vet when he comes back so he can check for signs of infection. If there is seepage/oozing and/or a foul smell from the area, there is an infection and you should then contact the vet again, no matter what vet, and get som abs for him.
Meloxicam (Metacam is the brand name) can be given in doses of 0,1-0,2 mg up to 1,5 mg per kilo body weight per 24 hours according
to Medirabbit. Rabbits metabolize meloxicam faster than f ex cats so they need a higher dose. I’d stick with the lower dose for less severe pain.
Fiberplex is what my vets recommend for bunny tummies that are out of order.

              Thanks for the responses guys.

I gave him metacam last night and 2 doses of fibreplex since. The area does not look any better – still seems more swollen than the shriveled up look it had before – and today, BOTH sacs look that way. But there’s no sign of infection whatsoever. His poops have gone back to normal and he’s eating as normal. I’ll give him a second dose of metacam tonight and just watch him closely for now, and probably speak to my regular vet tomorrow.

That sounds like a very good plan!
