hi there, newbie rabbit owner here. i’ve been raising rabbits over the summer so i do have some experience, but this bunny isn’t domesticated like my others. she’s a wild one that was nearly hit by a pick by some workers outside and they handed it off to us. the bunny had been 100% fine until i fed it a large apple slice yesterday. it was acting normally in the morning but in the evening it was suddenly behaving very bizarrely. it blew up like a balloon and can hardly stand correctly. you can see her odd behavior in this video i just recorded:

        http://https//www.youtube.com/watch…e=youtu.be

has anyone had a similar problem? have your rabbits ever recovered from this? i’m nervous but i know that whatever happens was probably nature’s plan anyway. god, i really do love this bunny.

the youtube link isn’t loading (for me at least)

I have not gone through this myself (well, the hurt part). When was the bunny hit? It sounds like you may be getting some bunny bloat. Try rubbing her belly gently. It may help her pass some gas and you should be able to tell if it doesn’t seem normal. If she isn’t eating or drinking, then I would definitely suggest taking her to a vet.

Is this actually a wild cottontail rabbit? I saw your video, after removing part of the link, and it looks like a wild animal, but I’m not positive. The video is very disturbing and it appears that the rabbit has some neurological problem. If it is a wild cottontail, you should contact a wildlife rehabber in your area. Here is a state by state listing I found: http://wildliferehabinfo.org/ContactList_MnPg.htm. I see that link has some old listings. There is another link, that should be more current, but I can’t get it to come up: http://www.wildliferehabber.org/. One  other link is: http://wildliferehabber.com/rehabber-location-listings/us. Your local humane society should know the name of a rehabber you can contact. If it is a domestic rabbit, it should go to a vet immediately.

I agree with tobyluv. It appears to be a cottontail and there is definitely a neurological problem going on there. I would try to get a hold of a wildlife rehab. There are physiological differences between cottontails and domestic rabbits, so I don’t think anyone here would be able to advise you.

I can’t get the video to work for me, so I don’t know about the neurological symptoms the others are talking. However, the symptoms you describe suddenly blowing up like a balloon and pain after introducing a new food sounds like gas.

Giving him Simethicone, sold as baby gas drops, would be a good idea with little risk till you can get him to a vet.

Please be careful and wear thick bite proof gloves while handling him. He is a sick wild animal.

Simethicone is fine to use with cottontails. Dana Krempels says 0.5 to 1.0 cc every 6 to 8 hours. That is, if you can get him to take it without too much stress. The neurological issues are very concerning though and we can’t diagnose him. Have you tried finding a wildlife rehab? Many times they have a hotline. I know our local one does.
