So Boonie has this white discharge coming out of her eyes and she squints a lot. I took her to the vet and he had a look and moved her eyelids around like I’ve never seen b4 and all the inside was white with pink looking lines and it looked awful. He said she has a bad infection but he wasn’t sure what kind. He gave her antibiotic injection and put this stuff that looks like glue in her eyes, I think it’s called chlorasone. And told me to do that twice daily. He put tons in there and the excess on her face was just sitting there and I asked him, what about if she eats that stuff? But he didn’t really give me a clear answer. So anyway she cleans her face and consumes some and I kept an eye on her and she seemed ok so I thought it must be ok so I gave her more that night and the next morning and now her face looks funny cos she has these huge wet hair circles around her eyes. Today I decided to wipe the excess off myself so that she’d consume less of it. I also noticed her poop is a lighter colour and they are egg shaped. So I’m wondering what everyone thinks?
I gotta take her back in tomorrow to get rechecked. Is there anything I should be asking the vet?

I would really suggest getting a second opinion and trying to find a rabbit-savvy vet. Most vets would have taken a sample of the discharge to test the possible infections, as well as given you a straight forward answer.

I’m actually treating a friends rabbit at the moment with the same thing.

Is it a blocked or infected duct she has? That’s what my friends bun has.

What I’m doing is removing as much of the infectious gunk I can before using the ointment. I can actually see where it enters the eye at the tear duct.

I can get a lot out by applying gentle pressure under the eye and at the inner corner. The stuff comes up into the eye, i then swab it out with saline on a cotton ball or saline soaked q-tip. Doing a warm compress on the eye is also helping. Just a face cloth with warm water held there for a bit. Usually it feels pretty good for the bunny. It also helps soften up the soiled fur to help clean it.
I’ve been using the saline to wipe under eye area too. They will look a bit weird with the fur all wet.

I try get the strip of ointment on centre if eyeball and it melts onto the eye. It has better chance of staying in eye longer and getting to source of infection if you’ve removed all the other gunk.

The ointment you have contains a safe antibiotic and steroid anti inflammatory. I was prescribed something similar, just different antibiotic in mine. It shouldn’t be a concern if she ingest some but continue to wipe under the eye with warm water or saline if you think there’s too much excess med there.

            {{{Boonie}}}

Oh, keep up good hygiene practice too. So wash hands before and after treating. I’m being OCD on this as I’m not wanting infection to spread to my bunnohs!

              Thanks guys.

My vets actually pretty good but he’s not very good at talking to people. I’m hoping I can maybe talk to one of the other vets tomorrow to get some info.

Jersey girl: I tired to get some gunk out tonight the way you said but nothing came out when I applied pressure.
I’m not sure if that’s good or bad
Her eyes do look a bit better but it’s hard for me to tell really. And with all the wet fur from the ointment I can’t tell if her eyes are still leaking. Plus she hates me at the moment cos I’m the evil lady that plays around with her eyes, so she’s been spending most of her time under the bed :-/

The change in her poop still worries me, so I’m gonna ask about that tomorrow at the vets. And I’ll speak to them about the fact I can’t push anything out, once they’ve checked how her eyes are doing.
If they show me any signs of them having no clue what’s going on then I’ll demand they sample it and find out for me

                Boonie update:
So I took her to the vet this morning and seen the other guy who explains things better. And he said her eyes are definitely healing and it appears the infection is gone, but I still have to keep an eye on it to see if it returns or if they in fact are still weeping which u can tell right now due to the medication. So hopefully that’s all good

But she also has a small ulcer, which he showed me and said it’s almost healed too, so again I’ve just gotta watch it.

He said her poop probably changed due to the antibiotic ingestion but should return to normal soon

So if all goes well hopefully Boonie’s eye problems will be over but otherwise I will have to bring her back to the vets again

So now it’s time to regain her trust

I’m not sure at the moment, she’s still upset over the whole saga
I thought I saw some of the gunk again tonight but it was just her fur. Maybe I’m paranoid now
And her poop is still strange
So I think it’ll take a few days b4 I know whether everythings better or not
Still concerned about the ulcer I didn’t know about

                        Thanks kitty

                        Update:
I Had a good check of her eyes tonight and there seems to be no new gunk and I couldn’t push any out either. Her fur around the eyes is still pretty matted so I tried to sort out some of that but it means that I can’t be 100% sure that her eyes aren’t oozing at some other time of day that I didn’t see.
The ulcer thing just looks like a small dent in her eye,,there’s no blood or any white stuff. So I think it’s ok

Her poop is still not normal, but most of it is, though she still does some larger egg shaped lighter poops, that almost look like they have gold in them.
Though she was doing those egg shaped poos for a while b4 the whole eye thing. I was going to go to the vet about that b4 all this. So if she’s still doing them, maybe I’ll have to go back to the vet about it.
I read that those poops could be caused by lack of fibre or dehydration so I gave her more hay and change her water more often to combat those things. The only other reason I’ve seen for egg shaped poop is disease, but I don’t know what kind. So I might get the vet to check the poop and get a blood test and hopefully everythings ok

That they’re a light gold colour suggest she’s getting plenty fibre. Is she a good hay eater?
Is she moulting at the moment?

Sounds like the eye is healing. I’m at the same stage with the lil bunny I have. Seems to still have excess tears but not infectious stuff.

                            That’s good jersey girl
Boonie never used to be a good hay eater but she seems to be eating more now. I don’t know if that’s bcos she had this infection or what but it seems to have made her want to eat more hay.
                            She’s not moulting atm

This morning there were lots of normal poops and only a few of the egg shaped ones and the lighter ones

                              the eye gunk is back
                              My poor little Boonie
Her poop seems normal except for the odd egg shaped one but she’s definitely got white tears again
The inside of her eyes doesn’t look as good as it did the other day
I’m gonna try get her to the vet again on Thursday

Im sorry to hear. Perhaps it is coming from upper part of eye rather then tear duct? Have you tired doing warm compress?

I wouldn’t worry too much about her poo’s if they are healthly looking, despite the shape. It might be just the way she is.

It could be coming from higher up, I’m not sure, but her eye does get the white stuff all up the lower lid and the front part of the eye and then it pools and drips out

I haven’t tried warm compress. I will try that, I make my own chamomile tea from my backyard so I might add that too it, to help soothe her eyes

Yeah her poop is pretty much normal again so that’s ok

I can’t get a good picture of her eye but here’s one of a rabbit I found online, it’s not of the white liquid but her eye looks like this at times too

You could even wrap up the leaves in a clean cloth after brewed and put that against the eye for the warm compress.

I just gave her a warm compress and she actually seemed to enjoy it. Just sat there, calmly purring

That eye thing in the picture, I see it often. Not really when she’s eating. More when she’s grooming or just generally sitting around

Went back to the vet today. And he said the ulcer is pretty much gone. And he gave me “tricin” for the infection to use morning and night. He said they are a lot better but still infected.
So fingers crossed this stuff works for her
She so sick of everyone playing with her eyes
She’s so smart, she even knows when I’m trying to trick her into letting me have a good look with some banana. She just runs away and hides, like screw u human.
