        Monthly weigh-day today.

Both boy piggies, Chocco and Latte, are maintaining their weight, so alls well with them.

In January, when Rusty and Pippi had their jabs, the vet said that Rusty in particular had gained a small amount over the previous year, and that while both bunnies were at a healthy weight, neither of them should gain anymore, so their daily portions of pellets were slightly reduced, and carrots became less frequent. This has kept their weights steady.

Its 18 days now since Rusty left us, and Pippi has lost just over 150g. I was concerned about him getting overweight from the extra food I’ve been giving, to help bond the three bunnies, plus the extra pellets via the teach n treat, and I was keeping a watchful eye on his waistline. Given he’s actually lost weight, he can carry on having that little bit extra, and we’ll see how he does.

Gina’s shoulder blades are still sticking out, but she has finally gained some weight, and is now weighing 150g more than when we got her. Her dropping are a nice shape, size and colour, and all she needs is for her hormones to settle down enough for her to be bonded with the other two.

Jenny still hasn’t gained any weight, which bothers me, given she is getting a good nutritional diet. She did struggle to recover from the spay, and then she had her jabs, as soon as the vet thought she was fit enough. She did develop tiny scab after the jab, so I guess producing antibodies has also taken energy from her. Her droppings can sometime still be a bit small, although they are nothing like the pitiful ones she was producing when we first got her. She eats loads of hay, plus fresh grass that I cut for them all twice a day, and I want hay and grass to stay at at least 80% of her food.

I’ve been monitoring her ears, as she has still been struggling to keep warm enough. A few days ago, I asked for some advice at the pet shop, and was recommended something called ‘Nature’s Touch’, which is a mix of timothy hay, bran pellets, alfalfa, dried sunflowers, dried carrots and dried nettles. She loves it, and both girls have been getting small amounts of that in addition to the normal pellets. Its higher in protein and fibre. Her ears have stayed nice and warm since she started on it, so I guess its doing some good. She’s having an active day today, so maybe her energy levels are going up, with the new food. I don’t really want to introduce anything high sugar into her diet, but I would be happier if she gained at least some weight, like Gina has, before winter, as I don’t over-heat the house, and it won’t be anywhere near as warm as its been, and even that hasn’t been warm enough for her.

Normally, I weigh the pets once a month, but given that I have been supplementing the bunnies diet, I did a mid-month weigh today, and its all good.

Pippi and Gina were both a nice weights, and have maintained those weights, which is great, as I was concerned that Pippi especially might gain too much weight, sharing the extra food with Jenny.

Even better, Jenny has finally gained about 100g, which I’m happy with, and I would say has now gone from underweight, to very slim

She has been getting sneaky extra portions, behind the side of the sette, when Pippi was looking the other way, but not too much, as she still needs to eat mostly hay.

Given the other two have maintained a nice weight on smaller portions, it looks like every bun can continue to enjoy a small daily portion long term, and Jenny will continue to get a little bit more, at least until next weigh day, so happy buns and tums all round

They are probably pretty happy about you adopting them too

Can I ask about the war temperature? Sometimes my bunnies ears are very cold and other times are warm. I know this might seem like a silly question but should I be worried when his ears are cold? If so what should I do? I have been wrapping a towel round him as I would hate to think he is cold

I think ears can be cold when the bunny is ok, but with Jenny, the ears were staying very cool to the touch, and she was huddled up and lethargic with it and her back also felt cool.

I was wrapping a warmed fleece blanket over her, but haven’t needed to recently. I went for the ‘Nature’s Touch’ when it was recommended, as it is slightly higher in protein than the pellets we had, and I thought she did need that extra protein. She was caught as a stray, and was somewhat malnourished when we caught her.

                    Bam, you are probably right

Beanie bunny, rabbit ears don’t say much about a bunny’s core temp. As GJ says, a too cold bunny will show other signs besides cold ears. Rabbits are actually very good at keeping warm and part of how they do that is by sending more or less blood out into their big ears. If it’s hot lots of blood gets sent to the ears to cool, if it’s chilly, the rabbit preserves heat by sending very, very little blood out into the ears. That of course means the ears get cold, but the bunny stays nice and warm. Down to about 12 C or 53 F a healthy bunny has no problem keeping warm (unless there’s a cold draft). Heat is much more dangerous to bunnies.
