Kira had her spay today. Her intestines got nicked when the vet cut her open. 🙁 the doc said she repaired it, and made sure her stools would pas thru, then did her spay. She said it “should” be fine and gave me antibiotics for her but to make sure she poops this weekend. I’m worried. Has this happen to anyone else? Also she’s messing with her incision, so I put a cut tub sock over her mid, but I’m worried about that too. The antibiotics she gave me to give her are pills so I have no clue how I’m going to get my bunny to even eat them. :-/

Get an e collar-either from your vet or a pet store, the small cat ones will fit on a bunny. That will keep her out of the incision. Did your vet give you a number to call over the weekend (to reach her, or for an emergency clinic) if there is an issue? If not, get on google and find one just in case. Otherwise relax and watch for poops!
          Hope all goes well!

Little darling. What type of antibiotics did she get? Some types of pills you can crush between two spoons and mix with sth so it can be syringed or eaten mixed with sth yummy. I don’t think you should even try to make her swallow a pill, since a bunny has no gag-reflex and can’t vomit.

An E-collar is good, you can make one from a hairband or sth until you can get a “real one”. Just so she can’t reach the incision. But if you make sth yourself you need to keep her in sight so it doesn’t get caught in sth or entangled so she suffocates.

A bunny that fusses a lot with her stitches may be in pain, did you get any pain-killer? If not I think you definitely should call your vet and ask for one.

Here’s a link to a picture of another member’s bunny in a makeshift E-collar made from a headband:

The antibiotics she got are in pill form. I’ll have to look at the name when I’m back inside. I crumbled up the pill and sprinkled it in her wet kale, but she won’t eat it. She hasn’t eaten more than a few nibbles of anything today.
She’s made a couple tiny but clumpy poops, so I’m hopeful that she’ll make more more once she starts eating more. She was always such a pig before her surgery.
The sock around her has done the trick to get her to stop messing with her incision. I took it off her today to see what she’d do and right away she started at it again so right back on it went. I guess it’ll be a permanent piece of her wardrobe for a while.

She got a painkiller too. But it’s also in pill form. So if she’s not eating, I can’t get it in her. :-/

Try crushing it up and mashing it with a banana. This may help entice her into eating it. The first dose can be tough but once any pain/discomfort has been managed you’ll probably have an easier time getting her to eat.

                  Good luck!

Crush them up and mix them with something yummy. If she still doesn’t want to eat it, then you may have to syringe it into her mouth. This is what I had to do with Wooly the last time he had antibiotics. I found that “sitting” on him worked well. You sit on your knees, with you feet tucked under you. Bunny goes between your legs. They can’t back up and you can use your free hand to steady them and keep them from moving forward. Once bunny has calmed down (there may be some wiggling), place the syringe in the side of the mouth (between the front teeth and molars) and slowly squeeze the medicine in a little bit at a time.

for both pills are u able to break them into pieces? I got pills once for my bunny and they were easy to break into smaller pieces (I broke them into 4 pieces). With the smaller pieces I stuffed them gently into a small but fat chunk of banana (enough banana so that the pill can be hidden inside, but not too much cause its not good to eat too much banana). Then I gave to my bunny and she would eat the banana and when she got to the pill she would just eat that too. Sometimes she would drop the pill piece out but I just either stuffed it into more banana or rubbed it in the banana so it smelled like banana. That might work for ur bunny too.

You can crush them very fine and mix in a little cc, juice or strained pumpkin.

I forgot to mention that you can pick up a pill crusher at your local pharmacy. This will crush the pill into a fine powder and make it easier to mix with something else. Amazon and some pet stores also sell them. Here is a link to one with good reviews

I took her the emergency vet today. Last night she got her sock off and picked at the incision. It wasn’t terribly bad, but irritated. Compared to my other bunny who got spayed on the same day, it looked not good. Also she started pulling her fur out
So the emergency vet was the sweetest. Her loved on her for a long time before he started poking at her lol. He said her stitches are lose, but not open. She didn’t need to be restitched or reglued. He thinks she’s picking at it cause it hurts and pulling her fur for the same reason. He gave her an injection of metacam and antibiotic today. And sent me home with liquid versions of both. Yay! He was pretty shocked that the other vet gave me pills for her.
So, we’ll be keeping the sock around her for at least a few days, and I’ll be waking up a few times a night to make sure she hasn’t gotten it off. Fingers crossed.

Also he thinks her intestines will be fine. She’s pooping though just a little bit( cause she’s only eaten a little bit) but even still she’s is.

It sounds like a great ER vet! I’m glad she got liquid meds, it really isn’t common for vets to prescribe pills for rabbits since they can’t swallow pills.

                                Continued healing (((((Kira)))))

So sleepy. I woke every half hour last night to keep her from pulling her sock off. She hates it. She tugs and tugs. I tried without today and within minutes she was back messing with tummy. Grr.
Any ideas how long it’ll be before I wont have to worry about her chewing it anymore?

Oh my gosh-I didn’t realize you had pills! That’s crazy-how did your vet think you were going to handle those! Your emergency vet sounds awesome though!! So glad you had a good experience there.

Were you able to get a e-collar? I can’t see the sock working…

The sock is not perfect. But seeing as she’s only still nibbling her food, I’m afraid of depressing her with a collar. So for now, I’ll just watch her 24/7.
