This morning Oliver is shaking his head almost constantly and holding one of his ears down. It looks like an ear infection. He’s still eating, but his eyes and nose are runny.

His regular vet opens in 40 minutes and I’m going to call and see if I can bring him in. However, I expect they’ll say they can’t see him. There is an emergency vet close by that sees rabbits. However, I never like the care he gets there.

If his regular vet wont see him, does this have the potential to be problem enough that I take him to the emergency vet? Or is a regular appointment in a few days good enough?

Find a vet and go in. Make an appointment with both if necessary. You can always go to your f irst choice for follow up if you have to.

Thanks. We’re at the emergency vet right now. He’s in the back getting checked out. I hate that they won’t let me be with him.

Heres what I was told: Olive has ear mites. Why? Because she saw white discharge super deep in his ear. So deep that she couldn’t get at it. So he’s on meds for that. Also, he’s drooling. She says that’s unrelated and should be checked by his regular vet.
Sounds odd to me that they didn’t find and mites. Any opinions on this diagnosis would be appreciated. I always doubt what they say. Also, should I clean his cage super well?

If it really is mites you need to clean his cage super-well. Did he get Revolution for the mites? Mites are not always found in a skin scraping.

The drooling sounds odd, more like sth dental.

No he got mometamax and some sub q antibiotic shot. Does this sound like the appropriate treatment?

Mometamax is not an anti parasitic drug, it’s a combo med that has antibiotics, cortisone and anti fungal component. It is for ear infections that itch. It sounds like a good med for the symptoms he’s displaying. If it’s ear mites it won’t be effective, but you will notice soon if this med doesn’t work.

OK so I called the vet. He got a shot of ivermectin (sp???) Which they said is for the unite mites. Does that treat for mites? Is that as good as revolution?

Also, what about his toys, wicker mats and baskets that he has in his cage? Are those OK or should I buy new ones?

I have no experience with mites but while your waiting for someone on here with some knowledge, I found you some links

Thank you! Those links are helpful. I’m still unsure of how deeply cleaned his environment has to be. My fiance and I have separate schedules, so Olive lives pretty much free range in our home except at night. I’m cleaning the rugs in his cage and will be scrubbing his cage. However, should I discard his bunny house and his toys and mats and baskets? Should I have our carpets cleaned? What about his hay? He likes to eat it straight from the bag so I have bags of hay down for him all the time. Should I discard of those?

You can use diatomaceous earth for carpets. Kills parasites, non toxic to mammals. Smaller items can be put in the freezer for 48 hours. I don’t know about the hay. when my Bam had fur mites I cleaned his wooden house and put it away for like a month because I figured mites + eggs wouldn’t survive that long without a host. Bam’s mites didn’t return.

Oh and yes, ivermectin kills all mites quite effectively.

It looks like your vet has covered all bases. You should see improvement within a week but the itching should subside sooner.

The drooling could be caused by pain deep in the ear from the infection and infestation. It would probably be an idea to follow up with your regular vet for a dental check.

He does have a regular vet appointment on Wednesday. His cage has been scrubbed down with a vinegar water solution.
I think the vet was wrong about the drooling. I’ve been watching super close and I see no drooling. I think Olive was eating a piece of lettuce and his mouth got wet. Regardless, he has a follow up on Wednesday.

Olive only ate about half of his dinner last night. I’m hoping thats just from all the stress and commotion of yesterday. He’s still pooping and peeing and he seems happy this morning.
Is it OK that he didn’t eat much?

You have to go by the poop then. If it changes, there’s some trouble. Antibiotics are known to cause tummy trouble. Maybe give him a tummy rub and a probiotic?

Sorry to hear your bun is having problems.

I’m glad your regular is going to check him out because white discharge can also be caused by an outer ear infection which would need different treatment.
