I will be attending my second year of college and will be living in a house (without any roommates yet) and in the near future I want to adopt a dwarf rabbit. Now since I am in college, I will want to make the 3 hour trip home during breaks. This leads me to my question.. I want to build a C&C cage, but my mother thinks they are tacky and should get a store bought cage and add an x-pen around it, so i can take the bunny back home for breaks. The problem is first store bought cages are super expensive, and second I would have to lock the bunny up in its cage at night and I feel its too small. I really would like the have everything planned out and bought before I adopt a bunny. Is there any other solutions for cages that I could bring home easily and give the bun enough room?

        THANKS

What I did/do for my bun is I have a piece of plywood with linoleum glued onto it (well…mine is two pieces since it was leftover wood from a different project) as flooring in an X-pen. Now, my cousin uses a foam mat for under her X-Pen…which is WAY easier to move, but less aesthetically pleasing imo…unless you can find some in a really pretty color which I wasn’t able to (although I am thinking of following what someone else did on here…I think it was Tori.rose, and use a brightly colored yoga mat as flooring for part of the cage…but I’m still deciding ☺️ Oh! If you want ideas for decorating an X-Pen tori.rose and bunsanddolls X-Pens are adorable!), but still prettier than an NIC cage ☺️ I also have put tons of cute fleece and cute ceramic food and water dishes…cute wooden toys, a pretty pink litter box, cute water bottle, etc in the pen as well to give it a ‘prettier’ vibe ☺️ Once I dismantle he NIC condo I have on top of the pen, I’ll hang twinkle lights around the top where she can’t reach it and etc. I also recommend picking up some baseboard/something similar to use around the inside perimeter to keep the bits of hay and whatnot from accumulating all around the outside perimeter of the cage because constantly vacuuming gets REALLY old ??. Here’s a pic of my set up now, it doesn’t have the bowls, her strawberry house, her stuffed bunny friend, most of her toys (she’s basically free roam so her toys are all over my room most of the time!) or the baseboards in it yet because I’m waiting on some of it to get in and some of it is just strewn about the room and I’m too lazy to put it back into her cage, but it gives you an idea ☺️

I used an X-Pen I found on Amazon…I can’t remember what brand it was anymore. I just looked for which pen was cheaper, metal, and had decent reviews. I did get it in 32in because my dog was a puppy and a HUGE jumper at the time and I did not want to run the chance that he’d end up in there with her…and it is 4’X4′ the way I have it set up right now ☺️ Each panel is (I believe!) 2′ wide, and then 32″ tall. My cousin has the same pen only 24″ tall and it keeps her guy in…but he’s a holland lop (as is my girl) and has no idea how to jump…so I would recommend the 32″ because I’ve never once worried about her getting out, and I’m a neurotic worry wart ☺️ Plus, if you want to in the future, it’s fairly easy to add extra levels with the NIC cubes ☺️

Okay thank you so much. Its sad that i have to run this by my mom ? (shes against me having a bunny), but this seems like a much more viable option. Once again thank you!

You’re welcome! They’re also not super expensive and easy to store (they fold right up) so you could possibly have two and keep one along with a litter box and some mats for the flooring, at your parents and another that’s more permanent and ‘cutesy’ at your place ☺️

I actually found out I had an x-pen, but its old and a brass color. Could i possibly spray paint it black or is that a no go for bunnies?

I probably wouldn’t spray paint it personally…Luna has been known to nibble on the bars here and there/grab it with her teeth to rattle it when it’s time for me to let her out for the day. But brass isn’t horrible of you can get the color scheme of your room/where the bun will be to not clash with it ☺️
